‘the sykes’ are a three piece rock & roll band from Philadelphia. The band originated in the Germantown section of the city in 2002. The band members are, Michael DeGennaro (mike d) on drums and an original member. Ellie McNichol on bass guitar, joining the band in 2006. John Zemanek on guitar, joining the band in 2008. All members sing lead and backup vocals. Mike d, El and John have all been members of local rock and punk-rock bands before ‘the sykes’. Influences for the band run long and broad going back to the ‘Velvet Underground’, ‘New York Dolls’, ‘Ramones’, ‘Cream’, ‘Sabbath’, ‘Motor Head’, ‘ZZ-Top’, ‘AC/DC’, ‘Black Crows’, ‘Mountain’, moving forward with ‘G&R’, ‘Betty Blowtorch’, ‘Cure’, ‘Gin Blossoms’, etc., etc. ‘the sykes’, are dedicated to the preservation of pure, simple, uncluttered in your face rock & roll. For ‘the sykes’, music isn’t a job, it’s not a hobby, they’re not in it to be cool. ‘the sykes’ play rock & roll because it’s their religion.
