Theta Naught is a purely instrumental, improvisational group of friends/musicians that formed in Salt Lake City, Utah near the end of 2002. Theta Naught is comprised of Ryan (bass, guitar), Jared (keys), Peter (cello), Darren (drums), and Greg (lap-slide).
They have played around with different sounds, structures, amplification methods, mathematical equations, computer processors, and such, and finally recognized that their best music and sounds would generate at the time of origination.
All five members of Theta Naught have been or currently are pursuing their goals of higher education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Darren graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering; Ryan completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering; Peter is continuing with a Bachelor of Arts in Romantic Languages; Jared is pursuing a double bacheloreate in Political Science and Economics. They all find themselves easily entertained with math jokes, deep conversations regarding the fourth dimension, quoting all genres of movies, and tying knots. They all enjoy continuing their education, are international travelers, and speak several foreign languages fluently.
The album ABACUS is the second full-length release by Theta Naught on Eden's Watchtower Records. It is a slight change from Somthing Scientific, being more musically advanced while dealing with variable time signatures and key changes based on mathematics.

Brilliant complexity in simple progressions

I've never been so impressed with an instrumental group. I'm a fan of Sigur Ros and bought the CD thinking these guys were going to be similar. In some ways they are, but Theta Naught is much more dynamic and agressive in their approach. Abacus plays like a classical CD from Beethoven or JS Bach mixed with Late 60's Miles Davis Acid Jazz... one moment it's quiet and mellow and the next moment there's total loud chaos and tension which all eventually resolves beautifully. The instruments that stick out the most are the cello, piano and bass guitar. The guitar work is outstanding as well and it seems like it's used more as a background instrument as opposed to the cello, bass and piano takes the lead. I'm going to have to replace the door speakers in my vehicle. The first track on Abacus has so much awesome bottom end that my cheap speakers keep farting out on me while this track plays. The production is outstanding on this record as well as the performance by all musicians involved. Cello is a great lead instrument for a group. I can't believe nobody thought of this before. I can't wait for many more Theta Naught albums to arrive in the future. Theta Naught has set themselves up beautifully with their first two albums... the possibilities are endless. Outstanding original work.

not to be taken lightly

The opening track of the instrumental Abacus, "Ignition Switch," reminds me of Pink Floyd's "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" mixed with a bit of NIN discordance on the wavery, single guitar notes. The thick, layered strings weld perfectly with the guitar throughout the disc and really, the cello and violin parts are the centerpiece of Abacus, standing out especially in "White Island." Low droning throbs in "America's Greatest President" and "Indian Princess." Theta Naught is not to be taken lightly!
