Album Notes

About Recess:

The Velmas have released what they call a double EP (half of the songs are previously unreleased tracks and half are tracks recorded from live shows). The new CD, called Recess, includes the song "Restless, Restless," which was selected out of thousands of entries as one of the top 20 finalists on Howard Stern's much-publicized "Restless, Restless" contest-they even had a clip of their song played on Stern's radio show last summer.

About The Velmas:

The VeLMAs - American for Rock

Since 1999, the Velmas - bassist Todd “Figaro” Minnick, guitarist Mike “Harvey” Grosshandler and drummer Michael “Bruce” Bruce - have been entertaining upstate New York. The band has become a favorite around Albany and Syracuse, NY, and is gaining popularity throughout the Northeastern U.S.

In 2002, the Velmas released their debut album, Another Day At School. Since its release, the album has received rave reviews and has opened doors of opportunity for the band. This was followed by Recess (2004), a “double EP” featuring new and unreleased studio tracks, as well as several live tracks. The Velmas' second studio album, Station, will be released internationally on City Canyons Records in 2006.

The Velmas are three singers and songwriters creating powerful rock music. Their sound is influenced by old-school to modern rock, punk, reggae, and even country and classical. In concert, the Velmas back their music with a playful, high-energy live show, which is the reason why Albany-area "Velmites" have voted them the Capital Region’s "Best Alternative Band" (Metroland, 2006).

Some really good choices were made with this CD. The advance songs sound awesome - I'm really looking forward to the full length album! The live recordings were very well chosen - They're great playing live to begin with, and they definitely picked some of the best for this. Orangeworker and Restless, Restless are wonderful - while neither is original material, they really show off the guys' talents!

This double EP shows just exactly how talented and versatile the Velmas really are. Opening the cd are pre-releases of original material showcasing the writing talents of Mike Grosshandler and Todd "Figaro" Minnick. Next is a cover song, originally intended for a tribute disc, demonstrating their ability to perform in the style of another band without losing the Velmas-flavor. Always up to a challenge, the Velmas then took the lyrics from a national contest, added their own music, and put together a top-notch entry that performed very well in the contest finals. And just in case you get to thinking that the Velmas are only a great studio band, they filled up the rest of the cd with recordings from a live performance. The energy in their performance and their onstage professionalism is exceeded only by the enjoyment of the audience.

Smart...brilliant...and other words of genius cover what this latest Velmas EP is all about.... Take a look at the actual cd and you'll see some great art by the photoshop master, mike/harvy. The disc alone makes you want to buy the CD...and not just in digital form. You must have this CD in your hands. the live songs intermingle with the unlive songs in such a perfect way because it just ROCKS...or RAWKS...this begs the question...why isn't this band signed?!
