It was all treat and no trick when City Canyons Records launched a special limited release of The Velmas new album, "Station", on October 31, 2006 to CD Baby and other select online and brick-and-mortar retailers with full national distribution beginning on January 2, 2007.
"Station" features three remarkable singer/songwriters who are helping to define American rock today. In fact, one might say--and The Velmas' fans often do--that The Velmas is "American for rock". Bassist Todd "Figaro" Minnick, guitarist Mike "Harvey" Grosshandler and drummer Michael "Bruce" Bruce have created powerful alternative rock colored by old-school to modern rock, punk, reggae and even country and classical. The listener will hear subtle echos here and there of a wide array of influences including Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. The album is a follow-up to The Velmas' critically acclaimed debut album "Another Day at School" (2002) and an equally successful EP, "Recess" (2004).
The Velmas, based in Albany, New York have shared the stage with such national artists as Collective Soul, Vertical Horizon, Moe, Winger, Everclear and, most recently, Soul Asylum and have performed at highly-regarded venues and festival throughout the Northeast including, by way of example, the Oswego Harborfest 2004 and Larkfest 2003 and 2006. The band was recently voted as upstate New York's #1 Best Local Alternative Band by the readers of the hip and popular Albany arts and entertainment publication, Metroland. The hugely popular band has an enthusiastic Street Team of well over 100 active members in 25 states and several different countries.
At the suggestion of a couple of savvy DJs at a southern radio station, J-Rock and Patty the Radio Girl of Rock Solid Pressure, City Canyons gave the Velmas a listen and was spellbound, quickly deciding to bring the Velmas to the world. And, world, just listen to STATION and you'll be spellbound too!

Awesome and refreshing!
author: Lauren Levine, Albany Student Press
Three-man band "The Velmas" have been big in the Albany scene for the last few years, even scoring an award for best alternative band of 2006 from Metroland. They've got a new CD out, "Station," with 13 great tracks, including a cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello."Their music has a strong alternative vein, with a little bit of punk thrown in. Somehow they manage to have a genuine sound, despite being in such a packed genre. This is probably due to the fact they don't stick to a set vibe. Each song has a feel that distinctly matches its lyrics and sets a mood to the sound. They don't try and stretch their words to fit their band's "sound." They avoid the formulas and go for their own brand of originality.
The band's influences show up at unexpected times in their music. In "Past Tense," there is a decidedly anti-social twist and a dark, deliberate sound reminiscent of Nirvana. "Would It Matter" is more like a journey from The Red Hot Chili Peppers into the realm of Primus. In short, their music has an awesome and refreshing old-school essence that makes it almost familiar listening after the first time.

Station Rocks
author: Chase
The Velmas are awesome. Period. They are great songwriters. They are great musicians. And they have a penchant for rocking so hard that innocent bystanders have been known to soil their drawers just for standing within an earshot of their music.
I own all of the Velmas material, and I thoroughly enjoy Station just as much, if not more than Another Day at School and Recess. The songs are catchy, inspired, and full of awesomeness so profound that even David Lee Roth would be reduced to a blubbering teeny bopper if he were fortunate enough to get his hands on this CD.
Order Station right now. And make sure you have clean underwear handy before you listen to it.
Rock on!

Station will be played on every station!!

Station is by far a true example of The Velmas' extraordinary talent. Previously recorded albums, Another Day at School and Recess, are both very good but this album, this album shows not only how talented the trio is but also shows just how they can shine individually. Each song stands on its own with its different vocal and instrument solos, but together the songs create an album of pure intensity and rock. This is a must have album and guaranteed not to leave your CD player!
