Album Notes

Imagine the Velvet Underground jamming with Uncle Tupelo -- a primitive-style Americana rock with an emphasis on great songs.

The West End has influences that cover all the bases. One member digs jam bands. One channels Parliament. One grooves to Keb' Mo' and Green Day. One wants to be Nick Cave.

Together they produce a sound they call primitive Americana rock. "Primitive" as in stripped down. "Americana" as in hearkening back to the hard-times roots of the land. "Rock" as in . . . rock.

The band was formed when neighbors Mike Shawn, Monique DeFrees and Brad Rourke got together and they felt a musical kinship. The tension -- and overlap -- between all their influences added up to something new. Longtime friend Randall Rose quickly filled out the sound and they began building a dedicated following by playing parties and local events.

They broke out in early 2006 and have been performing publicly and consistently ever since. Their live shows are marked by an infectious enthusasm for the music combined with respect for the individual songs. Their rapport with the audience keeps people coming back and their love of the music keeps people wanting more.

The West End is:

Keyboards: Mike Shawn
Drums: Monique DeFrees
Guitar & Vocals: Brad Rourke
Bass: Randall Rose

The West End has Risen
author: John Cooper-Martin

The West End is great unplugged, hard rock. Their songs either tell you such an interesting story that you find yourself becoming one or more of the characters in the story or they sing a song that rocks into the depth of your soul. Some of their songs even do both -- you find yourself believing, for a moment in time that you are one or more of the characters in the song and the depths of your soul are being rocked. The West End is a band who knows each other, musically, extremely well, as you can tell in their body of work, in their personal appearances, and in the album, \"Risen.\" The four play rock, almost as one. Also, while they are primitive Americana rock, at the same time they remind me, some, in very positive ways, of the early Bruce Springsteen and what I imagine Billy Joel would have sounded like with more musical accompaniment. Joel might have been more interesting; The West End definitely is interesting, already. Yet The West End has a style of its own, which I find very unique. Listen to the songs, on “Risen.” I think you\'ll hear an album you just can’t quite put down and stop listening to it; I did. The West End rocks! Enjoy rocking with them!
