Broken Surfaces, This Fair City's 2009 EP, is filled with raw dissonance, tension, and cutting vocals. Franklin delivers biting lyrics that are powerfully underscored by moodly guitar and haunting viola. From the opening strains on "What Comes Our Way," to the closing commentary of "In Transit," This Fair City roars into being, a dark and sweet mix on influences, and closes with a vengeance.
This Fair City draws on various musical interests to be exactly what they are: an eclectic mix of grunge rock and eastern European folk.
Line up at the time:
Jason Charles Franklin: Vocals, Guitar
Travis Schultz: Guitar
Brandi "Charlotte" Grahek: Viola
Robin Marshall: Drums
Stephen Burnett: Bass, Organ

You may’ve heard Jason Franklin’s gentle voice on the other end of the line if you’ve ever called CD Baby. And if so, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that his kind voice was capable of taking soaring leaps of angst and aggression similar to Jeremy Enigk. But as frontman for this Portland band, he releases emotional waves of controlled chaos and cutting lyrics with each vocal line. Eclectic, dynamic, and tense, This Fair City mixes their love for Fugazi and Sunny Day Real Estate with Eastern European folk music. Check out their excellent debut EP.
