Album Notes

The Long and Winding Road is a 2-CD set of 36 classic songs by The Beatles arranged by Alan Thomas for acoustic guitars, mandolins and other plucked-string instruments. Employing both fingerstyle and pick techniques as well as innovative ways of playing such as bowing and guitar percussion, these imaginative arrangements bridge styles from classical to jazz, pop and world music. The arrangements vary from solo classical guitar up to ensembles of twelve instruments. A must-have both for fans of The Beatles and the guitar!

Alan Thomas is a gifted guitarist, composer and arranger who has distinguished himself as one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. Combining the best of the classical guitar repertoire with original compositions and arrangements that bring new sound worlds to the instrument, his performances have enchanted audiences and critics alike with their virtuosity and great range of expression.

Alan Thomas was born in Atlanta, and studied with Ernesto Bitetti at Indiana University and Scott Tennant at the University of California at San Diego. He has been a top prize winner in competitions including the Guitar Foundation of America, MTNA and American Artistic Ambassador Competitions, and in 1997 won first prize in the prestigious International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Holland (becoming the only guitarist ever to do so).

Based in England since 1997, he has pursued an active career as a recitalist and concerto soloist, performing throughout the U.K., Europe, North America and Asia, and has been featured at many of the major international festivals. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with the Nieuw Ensemble, Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble ExposÈ and Kantak. His performances are frequently broadcast on television and radio throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, and he has recorded compact discs on the Accord, Metier, NMC, Matchless Records and Guitar Classics labels, including a critically acclaimed solo classical guitar disc entitled Aurora.

"Alan Thomas conjured a wonderfully rich world from his instrument in this spellbinding concert. Anyone interested in the best of what's being written for the contemporary guitar should seek out Alan Thomas, who exudes confidence and pleasure in his inspired playing and repertoire."

Wonderful Beatles music played by a true artist. Such a nice way to turn rock and roll into soulful pure guitar.

Spread over two well-filled discs, here is a very interesting and beautifully played set of some of the most well-known songs ever written. Variety is the order of the day, as Thomas has made every effort to arrange each successive piece for a new combination, so you get on the one hand a number of solo classical arrangements such as "Her Majesty", which becomes delightfully ragtime in feel, a cheeky "From Me To You", a slightly exotic "If I Fell", next to "Hello Goodbye" for two steel-string guitars, "Help", for three mandolins and a steel-strung guitar, "Come Together" for four steel-strings, a jazz guitar and a bass guitar, and even "I Feel Fine" for bottleneck slide guitar! This is all beautifully done, lots of fun and all wonderfully played and should be owned by anyone interested in fine guitar playing, and/or the music of the Beatles.

This two-disc project showcases Thomas’ impressive technique on several acoustic instruments: steel string guitar, classical guitar, mandolin, 12-string, bottleneck slide, bass guitar and a banjulele. The Atlanta native multi-tracks his solo playing so that some songs may have three or five or eight instruments interweaving simultaneously, a prodigious undertaking in and of itself. However, what strikes one most about this collection is Thomas’ bold arrangements. While Thomas plays a few of these "straight," he turns a few entirely on their ears, and fusses and tinkers with the rest. Straight, with only one instrument, and quite nicely done are "Yesterday," "Here, There and Everywhere," "If I Fell," and "In My Life." Happily, no surprises there. But Thomas takes the feverishly adolescent exuberance of "She Loves You" and transforms it into a lovely, achy, mature love song. It’s a completely fresh reading and beautiful -- and it’s pure genius....Thomas offers plenty of other fodder for discussion, but there’s no denying his fine guitar work. And his new arrangements of old classics allow us to chew on some chestnuts with fresh ears.

Two great cds of Beatle music by an accomplished guitarist

These two cds are such fun. Alan Thomas is obviously an accomplished guitarist. His arrangements of the Beatle tunes are musical, imaginative, and dead-on. Two of my favorites are the tongue-in-cheek, but still striking "She Loves You" and the lovely tremelo study "Because." Anyone who likes guitar music and/or the Beatles should want this cd set.
