Album Notes

St John of Damascus was an early church leader, who was influential in the development of the Greek Orthodox Church and wrote many hymns which are still sung today. The text upon which this song was built was probably written in Greek sometime in the mid 700’s AD while he was a monk at Mar Saba. I found it while researching the history of Christian music for a conference, and decided to set an adaptation of the English translation (originally by John Brownlie around 1900 AD) to music that would be accessible to modern ears. It is a Christmas hymn that focuses attention on the announcement of the birth of Jesus, heralded by the angels.
