The EP "Friends" is a recording project that started as a solo piano endeavor and evolved into something quite the opposite. Although much of Tom's career is steeped in the Jazz tradition, "Friends" is a noticeable departure from the styles of his previous recordings. Tom has creatively set this collection of standard, Americana repertoire into new, fresh settings. As a child, he enjoyed the serenading of his parents singing "Froggy Went a-Courtin'" and "Stewball"; in the last few years, Tom has come full circle in touring and performing songs such as "Hard Times" with pop star Jonathan Edwards. This recording embraces timeless, classic songs from the American Folk canon.
Aptly titled “Friends,” this recording celebrates not only music but the bond of friendship between Tom and all those featured on the CD. Some friendships, like those of bassist Paul Thibeault and renowned photographer Irvin Serrano, are new. Other comrades on this EP have been long-lasting, decades-old friendships like guitarist Tim Hill, the Starbird family, and recording engineer Pat Keane. Some friends are famous around the world (Jonathan Edwards!) and others are merely famous within Tom’s family and the community (like his dad, Papa Roger). Regardless, all of the people involved in this project are present because of ties that extend beyond musicianship.
Snow has clocked more than 5,000 gigs, four CDs as a leader, and dozens of recordings as a studio musician. “Friends” is the very first opportunity for Tom to share a side of his playing that most have only seen at a Jonathan Edwards show. It is an honest and sincere treatment of long-loved songs played with a genuine and heartfelt approach. ENJOY many pleasurable listenings to this wonderful EP!
