Album Notes

Set against a New York backdrop, Amanda Thorpe's powerful new collection of songs, Union Square, includes vocal contributions by Graham Nash and Martha Wainwright, guitars by Tony Scherr and Peter Stuart, and electronic arrangements by Greg Grinnell of Teledubgnosis.

Co-produced with Brad Albetta (who has worked with Freddy Johnston, Martha Wainwright, The McGarrigles, and Teddy Thompson to name a few), this moving and inspiring CD features the radio-friendly “You & Me in a Doorway,” the dark but dreamy “Life Is Great,” and the bluesy “Burn this House Down,” with the distinctive harmonies of Graham Nash.

Among other great reviews, People magazine noted that Amanda Thorpe’s debut album, Mass, “brims with lovely melodies and haunting vocals.” Thorpe's deeply felt follow-up, Union Square, captures the ongoing development of a gifted songwriter and performer.

REVIEWS

Union Square
author: Tom Pryor
Strolling through Poets Walk in Central Park, I hear a distinctive voice. It's a drizzly afternoon, I have no umbrella and don't notice. I hear sweet marwa blues sounds floating through "Life is Great" and it's coming from the bandshell. I hear middle east magic in "Love You Only," pulling me down below the old Time Cafe to Fez. "Home to me... Home to me..." Amanda Thorpe has made a beautiful record. "Union Square" is full of longing, for places, for people, it is New York City and everywhere you miss when you are lonely. Haunting melodies and wistful lyrics reminding you of Ray Davies. Think blazing on a sunny afternoon followed by a waterloo sunset.
