Album Notes

Go back in time to the early 90's. . . Wednesday's on the West mall. Thursday's on Rizano's. The 1991 low-budget bedroom recording, was rated one of Austin's top-ten cassette releases (remember those) by Austin Chronicle. Tracks 14 and 15 are rare live recordings of previously released TWD songs. This was the last of an era for Austin music when "an Austin band" could be identified by the style of music. Alternative percussion, and instruments (bongos, flutes, violas, etc.) and a care-free lyrical style and performance were key factors in a scene that somehow felt simply good - like you felt watching Sesame Street before school killed your soul. Their playing style was along the lines of Ben Folds Five, 10,000 Maniacs or the Mamas and the Papas. They are/were great musicians individually, and had an amazing chemistry when they played together. The band consisted of Matt Hart lead & backing vocals, six and twelve string acoustic guitars, mandolin, piano; Meyer Horn backing vocals, drums, percussion; Kit Pongetti lead & backing vocals, percussion; Rod Sherwood backing vocals, electric & acoustic guitars, piano; and Matthew Sturges bass guitar, bass cabulator, piano." Those Who Dig the band is an unsigned band of unparalleled longevity and professionalism. The one that almost got away is back. Kind of like that that old college flame whose letterin the mailbox makes your heart flutter. Now's your chance to go back in time.

Oh, nostalgia! The best stuff, with bonus tracks!

I have to give it a 5! I'm *the* Those Who Dig groupie! Seriously, wow, this and Those Who Dig (the other CD) are wonderful, and with bonus tracks now. The thing is, Trouser Galery and Those Who Dig (the CD and the group) were really a defining part of my life for a couple years. It's hard for me to separate 1992 and 1993 generally from Those Who dig particularly. Their music saw me through some amazing high and low points in my life as a young college student, and seeing these CD's back in print really puts a smile on my face. Sorry I can't make it to all your gigs anymore guys, but you'll always have a special place in my heart. And your mascott has a special place in my home, too. (Alena may not play with it.) Especially gratifying was seeing "St. Paul's Concert" as a newly recorded bonus on Trouser Galery; the original tape, which I still have somewhere, doesn't have it. It was one of my favorites in its short run, and I had always been sorry that it never made it onto a CD or tape. Now that that oversight has been corrected, life is very, very good. This by itself really has to bump the rating up to a 5. Audiophiles might really wonder at such a high rating, because it's obvious that TG was put onto CD from some tape. Whether it's ripped from the original four-track master or (more likely) from a production tape of TG, which was released in 1992 and, I think, recorded in Meyer's living room, its roots are fairly obvious, and the sound quality isn't exactly stduio crisp or full-bodied. Still, maybe nostalgia and the great feeling I always got at a TWD concert makes up for it. It certainly does in my case.
