Talamalika is a set of pieces for four hand drummers and four singers. Each piece stays in a steady tempo and meter, and each piece is built on successively shorter rhythmic cycles than the preceeding one, to produce a feeling of spinning inward. The pieces build gradually and are spatious in their timing, so they are very good for dance. Each piece is arranged for different instruments, including tabla, darbukka, riq, djun djun, caxixi, kanjira, hadgini, and many more. The drumming was recorded by four players in the same room at the same time, and the CD really captures that live energy, but is also very intricate and refined. The idea was that the drumming and the rhythms represent the natural cycles of the World, and the singing represents the human experience in that World.
