Tony Malaby has to be one of the most fluid improvisers working in a “free jazz” idiom, though, in truth, his work transcends even that classification.

Originally from Tucson, Arizona ,Tony Malaby has been permanently based in New York since 1995 and has been a member of many notable jazz groups including Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, Mark Helias' Open Loose, Fred Hersch's quintet and Walt Whitman project, and bands led by Mario Pavonne, Bobby Previte, Tom Varner, Marty Ehrlich, Angelica Sanchez, Mark Dresser and Kenny Wheeler.

His debut cd "Sabino"(Arabesque) made the NY Times and Philadelphia City Paper's top ten jazz lists for 2000. He has three brand new releases: "Adobe" available on Sunnyside in the US, featuring Drew Gress and Paul Motian; Apparitions" on the Songlines label featuring Tom Rainey, Mike Sarin, and Drew Gress; and "Alive in Brooklyn" featuring Angelica Sanchez and Tom Rainey.

Tony leads several projects of his own including: APPARITIONS featuring: Drew Gress, Tom Rainey and Mike Sarin. The Tony Malaby Trio, featuring Drew Gress and Paul Motian. Sabino, featuring: Michael Formanek, Tom Rainey, and Marc Ducret.

Pianist/Composer Angelica Sanchez was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1972. From 1990-1994 she studied piano and composition at Arizona State University. Sanchez moved to New York in 1995 and has since played with: Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Mario Pavone, Trevor Dunn, Mark Dresser, Ed Schuller, Judy Silvano, Greg Tardy, Reggie Nicholson, George Schuller, Jeff Williams, Daniel Carter, Mike Sarin, Tony Moreno, Scott Maclemore, Ben Monder and many more. Sanchez leads her own quartet featuring Tony Malaby, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey. Her debut recording "Mirror Me" was chosen as one of the "Best New Releases for 2003" in All About Jazz and made the top ten JazzTimes Critics' Picks list 2003. She also leads a trio with Mark Helias and Tom Rainey

Percussionist Tom Rainey was born in Los Angeles, California in 1957. Since moving to New York City in 1979 he has performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe with a wide range of artists, including John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Curson, Marc Ducret, George Gruntz, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Andy Laster, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, Mike Nock, Simon Nabatov, New and Used, Matthias Schubert, Tom Varner, WDR Big Band, Ken Werner and Denny Zeitlen. Rainey received an National Endowment for the Arts grant to compose and perform a concert of music for percussion and drums featuring Dave Samuels and Arto Tuncboyaci. Currently he is busy with Tim Berne's Paraphrase, and numerous others.
