The Tim McMahon Ensemble is led by Southern California drummer/composer Tim McMahon. The idiom is a more modern and adventurously spirited version of quartet, quintet and sextet original and standard jazz group writing.
There are a tremendous variety of moods which highlight the album, each distinct composition drawing from intelligent use of the ensemble palette...like the dreamlike hymn which opens "the Eye of Ra",or the driving horn lines of "Labyrinth".
The writing is intricate, logical, and always evocative of an emotional experience.
There's rhythmic excitement,intensity and daring...
(paraphrased notes of Jed Wilson)

GREAT release ---- solid writing, arranging, performance and sound
author: James Lee
I've always been a fan of drummer Tim McMahon's writing and playing --- and when I heard local musicians praising his work on this record I wasn't in the least bit surprised. On listening to the disc it was clear that their kudos were justified *in spades.* Tim's compositions - already strong when performed in a small group setting take on powerful new dimensions through the skillful arrangements he brings to the table on this date. The nearest point of comparison I can make is the Woody Shaw Concert Ensemble --- "Illuminations" delivers the same feeling of "elegant power." This is a disc I recommend mightily, and one that I find myself returning to on a regular basis.
