Album Notes

Toast, Fake it Happy
“If you like the music, you’ll like us”, says Toast bass player, Shaun Courbat.
And that in fact is the truth. The debut album from Toast is a blend of all the personalities and musical influences of the 5 members of the Cedar Falls, Iowa based band. From the philosophical musings of the lyrics penned by guitarist and singer Brooks Martin, to the straight forward style of singer and guitarist Craig Larsen, this album takes you on a ride through the band’s openly-shared collective unconscious. Then add Jeremiah Longnecker’s vocals and keys and you have a rare find these days, a rock band w/ 3 legitimate lead singers.

Working w/ Gold Record producer, Tom Tatman at Catamount Recording in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Toast has created a complete album. Each track can stand on its own, but Fake it Happy is intended to be listened to in its entirety. There’s a story the band has to tell, and it touches on the universal mythologies known to one and all. Toast asks you to go on a ride w/ them and see which golden thread reveals it’s self to you.

I may have a biased view since my baby brother fronts the band, but I do know what kind of music I like and this CD falls right in line. I have listened to it about 5 times all the way through. It has catchy music, and interesting lyrics (like "A billion years of selection doesn't lie", and "I'm making my way to the eastern front of my mind") that are either descriptive, or leave open room for one's own interpretation according to personal experiences. I gave it 4 stars initially because I haven't listened to it enough times to figure out if there will be tracks that I automatically skip when I play the CD in a few months. But I do know that the guitars in 'False Messiah' make my head bob the most, and that 'She's Still Here' is a fun song to end with. The music has a heavy feel to it, while at the same time keeping it upbeat despite the fact that the lyrics reflect relationship-weary knowlege (see 'Broken Machine' and 'There Was A Girl'). I don't think anyone would be disappointed with this purchase unless you are not a fan of driving beats and thought provoking, descriptive lyrics.

Great album with excellent songs from top to bottom. Many albums take a few listens to get in your head, but this album is instantly catchy and the songs all tell great stories on the first run through. Fake It Happy is one of the few albums I've bought recently that is fun to listen to from track 1 to track 12.
