Sometimes people ask me: “How did you come up with the name for your band?”
And I'll say: “Well, I don't have a band. It's just me - one guy with one guitar.”
There are also times when people ask: “Where are you from?”
And I'll say: “I'm originally from Indiana, but I live in Colorado now.”
Other times, however, a few of these same people will ask me: ”What kind of music do you play?”
And I'll say: “All kinds of music, really.” I'll then pause for a second before saying something like: “But then again, I guess I really don't play all kinds of music. I mean I don't play the traditional ceremonial music of the Plains Indians or East Indonesian goo-laba music or microtonal guitar. Although, I certainly enjoy listening to all three. I guess what I should say is that I'm influenced by all kinds of music, but I mainly just sing songs. In fact, the whole reason I wanted to play a guitar in the first place was to write my own songs. But by writing my own songs, I became more interested in music. This led me to the classical guitar and a couple of music schools, which at some point led me to the notion that I was going to write and perform songs that married all my training and influences with my songwriting roots. So I guess you could say I'm a kind of acoustic, eclectic guitarist. A guy who likes playing songs and instrumentals that aren't limited to just one style of music - Nick Drake meets Johnny Cash mixed with some flamenco, swingin' Hendrix. Some people might think the whole idea is strange at first, but it's really not all that different from any other singer/songwriter. Nevertheless, if by offering such a mishmash of tunes and styles, I somewhere along the way offend the delicate sensibilities of musical segregationists, then so be it. We all know life's too short to worry about trying to please musical segregationists.”
By this time people will usually ask me: “What's goo-laba music?”
