For the last 10 years The Toids (San Francisco) have been working on creating a blend of the folk musics of Eastern Europe while maintaining a sensibility with roots in new music, jazz, songwriting, and improvisation. The result is a rich tapestry of idioms that while at times seem familiar, the end result is both hardhitting and heart touching. Presenting new music with a finger on the pulse of traditional Balkan folk music, the Toids give a performance both rousing and introspective, danceable and serene. Featuring Ryan Francesconi, Dan Cantrell, Tobias Roberson and Lila Sklar, their 2006 release, "Unblocked Ears" is now available on Odd Shaped Case.

Fin-dancing to Balkan folk ??? Anyway, brilliant!
author: Roland Kreuscher
Almost 5 stars.
If all "blends and fakes" in this world were that skillful, solid in every aspect, intriguing, touching,superior-to-many-originals and, yes, entertaining as this "fake&blend" of musical influences from eastern europe and the black sea area, well then ...
The Toids present a very, very fine CD here. (Although I haven't got an idea about Ruupert and his fins.) If you like the samples get it - no weak moment in any of the takes. Perhaps their "Unblocked Ears" is even better.

For All Ages

This album is so unique. Every time I listen to it I feel like I am transported to some Eastern European country. I bought it for my mom for Christmas after seeing them play with Joanna Newsom, and my whole family has really enjoyed it. I want more!

I love this music!
author: Jane Sokolow
I heard the Toids play Gina Leishman's compositions at a performance of As You Like It at California Shakespeare. I loved it greatly, but didn't know whether I liked Gina or the Toids, so after finding that CD Baby had some of both, I went for broke and got one of each. Both are great, but very different. I especially love the Toids when they play around with timing and make those little wheezy noises.
