Four years ago the Toilet Boys were at the top of their game. They shared stages with many of their Rock n Roll heroes including Blondie, The Cramps, The Damned, The Ramones and Motörhead, just to name a few. They had their music featured in box office smashes such as American Pie 2. Their video for "Another Day" was beating the White Stripes on MTV 2's Rock Countdown, and they were on a European tour playing sold-out stadiums as main support for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their live show was hailed as nothing short of legendary: a pyrotechnic tour-de-force.
It was during that European tour when the band got word of a tragedy in the States: 96 people perished at a Great White show, due largely to pyrotechnics gone wrong. For a band that has seen its own share of pyrotechnic chaos -- they set fire to the London Astoria at a sold out show, prompting Q Magazine to call it “one of the top 10 worst Rock n Roll disasters under the Stone's Altamont concert” -- the news really hit home.
The Toilet Boys returned to NYC to discover that Federal Agents had been asking NYC club owners about their legendary EXPLOSIVE (and mostly unlicensed) live show. On their own “Masterplan Entertainment” label, with no tour support or marketing budget, the prospect of doing the live show which made them famous (and vice versa) became an impossible reality.
Rather then tour with a half baked/watered down show, the Boys did the only honorable thing: they pulled the plug. Their last string of shows happened in front of 20,000 frantic Europeans. And like the aforementioned infamous London gig - the Toilet Boys went out with a tremendous BANG.
Now, four years later, CBGB's has closed, New York City is considered one of the safest cities in the United States, Williamsburg Brooklyn and the "hipster" sound is the flavor of choice, and the Toilet Boys stand as the last great Rock n Roll band to come out of the scene (and streets) that spawned the likes of Blondie, the Ramones, Talking Heads, the Dictators and the New York Dolls to name a few.
It seems that a shake up is once again in order.
The forthcoming album 'Sex Music' picks up – literally - where the band left off. Most of the songs were written and demo'd in the year before Toilet Boys went on their final tour. And now 4 years later, the Boys have come together to re-record some of these demo's that would have made up their next release. The energy of the sessions even inspired a brand new track -- “Drug of Choice” – complete with a remix by each member of the band, “for kicks.”
To get a brief insight into the glamorous, chaotic, and dangerous world of the Toilet Boys, here are some reflections from guitarist Sean Pierce (from the liner notes of ‘Sex Music’):
“From the gutters of New York City to pool side on the Sunset Strip... 'Literally' setting fire to clubs around the world... 20,000 fans clapping in unison to the breakdown of one of our songs...Fighting with bouncers...Fighting with fans... Fighting with promoters... Fighting with each other... 2nd degree burns... Assholes at labels... Starting our own label... Being embezzled by a millionaire terrorist... Our video on Fuse & MTV... Cheap sex... Psychotic episodes... Ecstatic highs... Long drives... Fun drunks... Bad drugs/good drugs/no drugs... label advances and getting dropped... Incompetent managers and the best manager in the world... Television commercials directed by a pissed off Spike Lee... Playing with most of our heros... Friends and flames... Confetti and gunpowder... Smuggling explosives on planes... 9/11/01 - the release date of our first full length CD... Johnny Bully (rip)... Recording sessions... Writing songs... Tour moms... Dark daddy... Broke down vans... "Pleasure Me" from the back of the tour bus... Makeup... Sweat... Blood... Stolen guitars... Smashed guitars... Burned guitars... Burned fans... Broken heels... Lawyers... Lawsuits... Jail... Missed photo shoots... Hot photo shoots... Rock n Roll whores... Waiting around bored... and EVERYTHING in between!”
