Wine Stained Heart

by Tom Armstrong

Classic country music from the "three chords and the truth" school. You will believe these songs are true, because they are. Great singing with pedal steel guitar and close two-part harmonies.
Genre: Country: Honky Tonk

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Country music has always had a split personality: do-right family values on the one hand, and rip-roaring drunken hell-raising on the other. The songs on Wine Stained Heart explore both sides of the divide and how they push & pull on each other.

Musically it picks up where Tom Armstrong's previous records (Sings Heart Songs & Songs That Make The Jukebox Play) left off. Clean, gutsy lead vocals put the lyrics over with feeling. Tom's own idiosyncratic lead guitar shares the spotlight with pedal steel and piano. As in Western Swing, the individual players are given room to stretch and express themselves, to come up with their own parts and improvised solos, breathing life into well-worn forms like the two-step and the Ray Price shuffle.

Produced by Rob Douglas, recorded in Los Angeles by Pete Curry (Los Straightjackets). Featuring the talents of David Berzansky (Hacienda Bros) on pedal steel guitar, Brian Whelan (Wheelhouse, Dwight Yoakum) on piano and harmony vocals, and Les James (Red Meat) on drums.

Excellent
I first came across Tom Armstrong way back in the early 2000's. I had a fascination with a small Scottish record label 'Shoeshine Records' who amongst their rosta of musicians had the said Mr Armstrong. His songs were a revelation to a predominantly indie kid at the time. Simple (as in not messed about), straight to the point, that 'crying in my beer' vibe and the lovely country twang underpinning the songs. I even got the chance to see him play live in a small pub in north London (again way back) and that was a delight. This latest release on early listening slips in amongst his previous records very comfortably. Welcome back Tom. Oh and his other records are well worth investigating.
