Album Notes

Whenever trombonist Tom Ervin plays, you often hear people remark, "It seems
so effortless."

Ease may be Ervin's trademark, but it is his eclectic experience that has
earned him international acclaim as one of the world's premiere trombonists.

Throughout his professional career, Ervin has been recognized for his
outstanding work as a recitalist, concert soloist, chamber musician, jazz
artist, author and educator. That range of expertise, coupled with his
mastery of jazz and classical genres, make Ervin one of the most renowned and
respected trombonists today.

During his career, Ervin has appeared in concerts and held clinics in
Australia, Europe, Mexico and throughout the U.S.

Ervin's extensive jazz credentials include performing with the Tucson-based
Dixieland jazz band, Jazzberry Jam, appearing in musical theater and
international engagements with fellow UA jazz music professor and pianist
Jeff Haskell.

Ervin's classical credentials include a three-decade position as Principal
Trombonist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. He also is a member of the
orchestra's Brass Quintet, which frequently performs in the community and in
schools.

I'LL BE AROUND is a remarkable album of a versatile trombonist playing great favorite jazz standards, entirely recorded straight to 2-track with no edits, splices or overdubs.

Ervin currently is Professor of Music at the University of Arizona, where he
has taught trombone and jazz improvisation for over 35 years. He also founded the
School of Music's Jazz Studies Program. The author of two highly-regarded
books of trombone studies (both available at his website), Ervin is also a past president of the International
Trombone Association.

Ervin graduated from the University of Arizona with distinction, earning a
degree in Music Education. He has a Master of Music in Performance from the
University of Southern California. He also attended the Juilliard School of
Music in New York City.

A Small Gem!
author: Thomas M Castillo
I really enjoyed this CD, and not because the soloist is named Tom. The trombone is usually an overlooked instrument, but not in this case. The arrangements and trio were well done.

A must CD for any trombonist or jazz lover

Tom plays with such immpecable taste and such a warm sound, I could listen to him all day. The sidemen are also great. No trombonist should be without this CD and let's hope Tom is around for a long, long time giving us more of same.

I keep playing this disc over and over. Its great...
author: David Van Syoc
Tom Ervin plays an incredibly clean, flexible and imaginative trombone. He's backed by very capable piano, bass and drums. I'd love to hear more. In fact, that's the only problem: this cd is the usual length of a vinyl lp, though cds can be much longer. Guess I'll just need to check out his other cds as well.
