Album Notes

Say you’re a young guy who takes the road less traveled, a path that shocks your friends: you decide you want to be a Catholic priest. But seminary isn’t quite what you imagined, and the struggle between your secular and spiritual selves—not to mention the institution—is anything but holy. So you turn back, your faith betrayed, your future blurry.

Now what?

If you’re Tom Goss, you make Naked Without, a sonic record of that journey and a celebration of new beginnings.

Don’t expect hymns. Tom offers up surprisingly dynamic and melodic acoustic rock that features muscular guitar, soulful bass, distinctive vocals—and a unique voice. If the 25-year-old has any patron saints, they include David Gray, Dave Matthews, Damien Rice, Ben Folds, and Joss Stone.

Born and raised in Kenosha, WI, Tom moved to Washington, DC to attend seminary in 2004 and lives there still. While a volunteer at a medical clinic for the homeless, he met bassist William Henderson, who had been a successful tour and studio musician before he, too, took a wrong turn. In getting his life back on track, William joined Tom in recording these expressive and explosive songs.

The CD’s title, and Tom’s songs, ask some tough questions: In what do you clothe your identity? What—or whom—would you be naked without? What would you sing about then?

Tom’s answers are definitely worth listening to.

Good self-produced debut
author: JIMJMD
If you like great guitar licks and soulfully engaging lyrics, Tom Goss is someone to watch for in years to come. This is Tom's self-produced, labor love CD...that first one where you hope in the middle of the process, something great happens. Tom's a well-studied musician who comes across as a throwback to the days when artists took risks and wrote songs from their hearts, not by corporate memo or packaging. As both a singer and a musician, he's done a capable job here of launching his body of work. With some more performances under his belt and a bit more "road wisdom" to gleam from, I imagine Tom will go far!

Introspective music perfectly fitted to fall / winter season.

Certainly a buy it Now!! Straight forward guitar interwoven with intricate bass lines exploring personal issues we all have pondered at one time or another. Not gimmicky in any way, but every so often a delightful hook or choral line will pop in. Reminds me of early Simon and Garfunkel not in a musical way, but in it's grounding in reality. Some tunes could have better production values, but overall a great first effort!

Really interesting and insightful music

Tom Goss' first CD is great. Songs are varied in terms of subject and style, but always insightful, and emotionally touching. He has an easy voice to listen to, and has a compelling sense of rhythm. His sense of self draws you in. Can't wait for the next CD from this up and coming talent.
