Three horns, double bass and drums weave together to bring lyrical melodies and rich harmony at its most essential. Tender and delicate at times, Shark punches when it wishes to. Solid like funk, fluid like jazz.

Album Notes
Let Shark take you on a musical journey.
The instrumentation – three horns, double bass, drums - will suggest jazz. Soundscapes are painted before you as the four voices weave together to bring lyrical melodies and rich harmony at its most essencial. And listen on. The sound is jazz, but the pulse is something else. Here is Shark’s contrast and its key to making the trip fascinating; tender and delicate at times, Shark punches when it wishes to. The double bass moves into electric bass territory and drives through the groove from one of Barcelona’s hottest funk drummers. Solid like funk, fluid like jazz.

Five clear voices from Barcelona’s vibrant music scene fuse the meeting point between the idea of music and the passion of its molten state, as Tom Johnson’s compositions blend into explosive and inspired improvisation. This is energetic stuff. Shark work as a team to move you. We want to take you somewhere.

Tom Johnson is excited about his latest project, the Shark quintet. “I think I’ve found a format where I can really explore what I want to express”, he explains. The band has an unusual instrumentation: trombone, two saxes, double bass and drums. “This is a great opportunity to get stuck in”

Isn’t it difficult to create harmonic interest with this line-up?

“Definitely not.” Johnson is convinced; “the fact that we have no harmonic instrument has two important implications. First, it means that we can construct a harmony between all of us. When I write I can use up to four notes if I wish to and that’s more than enough to create a rich harmony. What’s more, the chords that we build tend to ring out more than they would do on a guitar or piano, because each instrument brings it’s own overtones to the equation.”
“Secondly”, he adds “this means we can free up, putting sound together in composition and, of course, in improvisation”

Since arriving in Barcelona from England, Tom Johnson has got deeper into music both as a writer and as a performer. “I’ve been lucky; I’ve had the chance to do a lot of things.” He works regularly as arranger and trombonist for a diverse array of groups, from the groove of La Fundación Tony Manero, the salsa of Los Fulanos, and jazz with Philipe Hiflinger’s International Swing Gigolos, the Badalona Big Band and the Barcelona Big Acustic Band.
He has also been priviledged to work with Frank Wess, Jesse Davies y Lew Tabakin, has worked in theatre with Sergi Belbel and Carles Santos and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally

“He tenido suerte, reconoce.

Tom Johnson's Shark / In Motion
I've heard this fantastic jazz band live on stage at the beach of Platja d'Aro in Spain in summer 2008 and I was absolutely enthusiastic about that lively and crunchy sound which - by the way - is reproduced on CD in facsimile.
Never heard such a rousing and funky jazz band before and so I'm was happy to get this CD from CD-Baby-Nice-Guys-and-Gals. Thanks a lot !
But back to the band. Shark seize you and never lets you go. These mesmerizing drum beats - dry as a bone - force you to move your body. Check it out for yourselves, you' ll not regret.
