Album Notes

Skylark, the third release on Adventure Music from acclaimed jazz vocalist Tom Lellis, features the always captivating Lellis’ lyrical interpretations of instrumental works by Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Toninho Horta, a medley of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, three original compositions, and - as the CD’s title track - a haunting version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark”.

On Skylark, which was arranged by Grammy winner Vince Mendoza and others, Lellis’ facets as vocalist, composer, lyricist and conceptualist are accompanied by the 52-piece, stringed, Netherlands Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Grammy-Award winning bassist and composer John Clayton. The CD is a lush departure from the elegant duo pairing of Lellis’ 2008 Adventure Music release, “Tonight”, on which he performed with legendary Brazilian guitarist Toninho Horta.

Originally issued in limited release in 2002, Skylark was “enthusiastically recommended” by Allmusic.com, was lauded as a “stunning accomplishment” by 52ndst.com and was the “Most Requested CD” at WBGO radio.
