Songwriting is a craft I started pursuing at the age of fourteen when I turned a poem I
wrote about my first girlfriend Freda, into my first hit song, “SHEILA.” Unfortunately,
Freda moved out of the neighborhood and she never knew about my poem, and as
far as I know, never found out that she was the object of my teen age crush, and the
one who inspired me to become a songwriter. Thank you, Freda, wherever you are..
So here I am, after all these years, still writing songs, like “DEVIL’S SOUL PILE.” This
song is a departure from my normal and expected style, and one that tells a story of
dysfunctional families and the effect it has on our youth. Lyrically, this song is a bit
serious, and was inspired by the everyday news of violence in our neighborhoods,
and cities, but a song with a message of hope. “IT’S FOR YOU I’M ME,” is a song I
wrote for my wife, soliciting forgiveness after a spat, when flowers, chocolates, and
champagne didn’t work. Writing her a song worked perfectly.. “REMEMBER,” is a
song of enduring love. “WITHOUT HER,” “WATER UNDERNEATH MY BURNING
BRIDGE,” and “WHAT IF’S AND SHOULD HAVE’S,” are songs of heartache over love
lost. “THAT’S WHEN SHE RAN OUT OF TIME,” is about unfulfilled desire.
“MEMPHIS ME,” is about long distance relationships, and “LOVE FOR MY WOMAN,”
is all about the power of love.
For me, songwriting comes in waves, and I will write as many new songs as possible
during these short periods of creativity. This collection contains some of my latest
efforts, and although I never know when the next rush of new ideas will come, if ever,
I am always hopeful for just one more song to write. It’s just something I love to do,
and I hope you enjoy.
