Album Notes

Tom Taylor has spent most of his musical career playing in the Vancouver band "She Stole My Beer". After two albums and years of touring, the band decided to call it quits prompting Tom to pursue songwriting as a solo artist. He attributes his songwriting style largely to influences the likes of Joe Ely and John Hiatt. "King of July", features the guitar playing of Canadian string virtuoso Steve Dawson, renown for his work with Canadian group "Zubot and Dawson" as well as playing with Kelly Joe Phelps. The rhythm section on "King of July" consists of Geoff Hicks of "She Stole My Beer" on drums and Darren Paris on Bass. Both of these players are among Canada's finest musicians. The striking back up vocals on the album are provided by Jeanne Tolmie of "JT King" and Big Yellow Taxi" fame. On "King of July", Taylor carries on the classic tradition of the singer/songwriter, capturing the listener with introspective and emotion filled lyrics.

Long live the King!
author: Chris MacMinn
Tom's voice is gravel wrapped in silk - like Jackson Browne after an all nighter of cigarettes and whiskey. Poetic lyrics and beautiful arrangements combine with an earthy presence of serene melancholy and backwoods country. Jeanne Tolmie's haunting vocals and Steve Dawson's superb guitar work complement Tom's. Good songs, many of them great. Don't pass this one by.

I couldn't agree more about the addictive quality of this CD. PARTICULARLY the title tune. I was hooked from the first time I heard it and can't seem to get tired of it. Jeanne Tolmie's harmony vocals are loaded with character and blend perfectly with Tom's. Tom's writing is the kind of stuff that I find myself constantly saying "I wish I'd written that!"

King Of July-Tom Taylor

This is the kind of album you wear out but don't get tired of, and tell all your friends about. Most telling, I think, is that I don't have a favourite song from this collection - they're all equally good. The themes are unpretentious and the guitar is clean, verging on profound.
