Album Notes

"Tonca begins this vibrant album with the autobiographical "Committed to Jah", which details his personal traits at an early age. The title track explains that although his tribulations have been great, Jah has guided and kept him humble.

"Stay in School" is a plea to the youth to "Stay I say, stay I say! Don't let it bother you now to hear me say without an education they will cut your pay, but if you are lucky like I heard some folks say, it's all about money so earn it the right, rightful way."

Committed to Jah is an upful album which includes songs of thanks and praise, love ballads and mighty testimonies on such issues as the suppression of music, and saving the environment.

Tonca has a positive Reggae sound which reflects a rich musical vibration of his hometown in St. Maarten. Buy this album if you enjoy conscious Reggae." - REGGAE REVIEWS by Josh - RastaMon Times

Here's what Chuck Foster thinks, from THE BEAT VOL. 17 #2, 1998 - "Reggae Update" "A light Caribbean feel and gentle delivery mark Tonca's Committed to Jah and Tounka & Friends: For You Only (Alfmar). You'll feel like you're plunging into the warm waters that surround St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, where these discs come from as you touch up the straightforward songs like "Stay in School" and "Save the Environment" of the former and "Your Feeling Is Mine" and "Amigo Con Nos" of the latter. Reggae seems to touch every portion of the world and Tonka--or Tounka--reaches back and touches us through it on these pleasant and personal releases. [Alfmar Records, bronese@megatropic.com]

Review by Jabulani Nyathi, WHRW 90.5 FM Binghamton, New York "Committed to Jah" Has a Song for Every Reggae Fan. If you enjoy love songs, spiritual songs or hearing a song that features a singer and then a DJ rapping over the rhythms, then Committed to Jah is your pick. The title track and Suppression of Music are my topmost picks on this Album. All in all this album, with Tonca's very unique singing style, takes reggae music to higher heights."

Review by Leon Brewster, CaribbeanCity.com One does not have to listen long to the smooth rootsie rhythms of reggae singer Tonca, to be convinced that he lives his life true to the title of his hit: 'Committed to Jah'. Tonca's vocal style is true to the chant of rastafari in meditation. His musical composition and accompaniment are reminiscent of other greats like Burning Spear, and Black Uhuru. It's no wonder Tonca's albums, especially his last three, have seen tremendous success on the international charts."
