Toney Lee's (The Gospel Poet) musical roots can be traced to the Mt. Lebanon Baptist church in Brooklyn where he sang as a soloist witht he churh choir. Coming from a musical family, it almost seemed inevitable that Toney Lee would become a recording artist. His brother, Arnie Love, recorded for Profile records and his grandfather, John Englishm gave Max Roach his first drum lesson and let his own big band. The band was called John English and his Society Orchestra.

Toney Lee began peforming professionally in the late 70's singing with local groups from the New York area. After two years of voice studies a the Brooklyn Conservatory for music Toney Lee began to explore othe musical areas. He worked witht he off broadway production of Guys and Dolls ans sharpened new skills as a writer and arranger with the single "You Ain't Really Down," recorded by Status IV. This song reached the top 40 dance chart. As a recording artist, Lee enjoyed considerable success with hit releases that included "Reach Up," a top 10 dance hit, "Love So Deep," a top 20 dance hit, and "Teaser," a tope 50 R&B hit.

In 1999, two producers Phats and Smalls, from London, England, sampled Lee's voice and lyrics from "Reach Up" recorded it and created the worldwide dance hit "Turn Around." This single went to sell over 2 million records and was one of the biggest European dance records of 1999.

As a writer and producer fo contemporary gospel and inspriational message music, Toney's goals are to bring peace, love and understanding to the world through his love for the Lord in his music.
