Ton-Taun’s second album, Exporter, is in many ways a departure from their first. Unlike the band’s debut, Circus Court, Exporter was recorded in bassist Mario Borgatta’s home studio; due to Exporter’s rich, layered sound, this fact may come as a surprise to both fans and first time listeners of the band. Though Ton-Taun has gone without the professional sheen that comes with recording in a proper studio for their sophomore effort, Exporter shows that the members of the band clearly haven’t abandoned a dedication to thoughtful songwriting and interesting arrangements. While Circus Court shows a band searching for it’s own unique sound, Exporter finds Jordan Capizzi (vocals), Doug Hynes (guitar), Mario Borgatta (bass), and Louis Borgatta (drums) refining their skills as musicians, taking sonic risks, and experimenting with song structure. Opening track “Headdresses,” is perhaps the album’s most straightforward “rock” song, containing a simple, yet powerful guitar hook, and an aggressive vocal performance. Exporter’s following tracks, such as, “Arner’s,” “Importer,” and, “Psychopath,” showcases the band’s talent for creating engaging instrumental breaks. Album closer, “The Feeling You Get When You Drive With No Shoes On,” stands as a testament to the band’s growth, opening with an understated introduction, and exploding into a dynamic and complex epic. Exporter marks the sound of a band that feels comfortable enough in it’s own abilities to reach outside of it’s comfort zone for inspiration; Ton-Taun has without a doubt pushed the limits of their sound in crafting Exporter, and have done so with remarkable results.
