Album Notes

For an artist four albums, one dvd, a handful of live records into his career, having had songs placed in several prime time TV shows, (including the critically acclaimed ABC series, Brothers and Sisters and NBC’s Friday Night Lights) and having shared the stage with everyone from *NSYNC to Marc Anthony, Joss Stone to Chris Whitley, you would think Tony Lucca might be a household name by now. Instead, Lucca manages to stroll casually under the radar, patient though persistent and completely content with his place in today’s ever-evolving music business.

He’s been in bands since the age of 10, been recording in the studio since 13, started touring and performing for fans just about the same time he got his first drivers license. Though it wasn’t until Lucca turned 18 and moved to Los Angeles that he realized his true potential as a legitimate artist. After familiarizing himself with the landscape, Lucca soon began writing and recording music with some of the most talented artists and players around. In 2001 he received the LA Music Award for Best Male Singer/songwriter of the year as he continued to fill venues coast to coast.

Tony Lucca’s work has spanned a wide range of genres and musical styles; from a jazz-infused pop sound (reminiscent of Steely Dan’s Aja period) to a very woodsy, Laurel Canyon style, (a la Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne) all while maintaining a consistency of texture and tone. His lyrics and vocal tone are instantly identifiable, even to those who may have only heard him once or twice.

It’s with this in mind that Lucca shares his latest effort, Close Enough - The EP. recorded entirely at Epiphonic Studios in Lenoir, North Carolina in a single session, these five songs, (performed solo with just his voice and ’73 Martin D-35) give us an extremely intimate look at a songwriter in mid-stride. In the title cut, “Close Enough”, Lucca lays out his observations of today’s current events in a barrage of imagery and prose that reveal the irony and confusion in today’s befuddled world. “I Can, I Will, I Do” is a Love anthem, played here with an almost candle-lit intimacy - a thorough expression of unconditional Love. In “True Story” we hear the, well, true story of Lucca’s journey into adulthood, chronicling his path along the artist’s way. “It takes the time it takes, to get it right...” So it does. “New York City” is a vivid depiction of a man making his way through the streets of Manhattan, meanwhile drawing comparisons to life on the west coast. And finally, “White Mornin’” draws us in even closer with an emotional retrospective from beyond the grave, as Lucca paints a rather moving, albeit hypothetical, posthumous portrait.

As Lucca heads back into the studio to work on an upcoming full-length record, Close Enough - the EP gives listeners more than just something to hold themselves over. This intimate record puts us back in touch with a profound and true appreciation for honest-to-god good music.

I love hearing new Tony music! He's an amazing performer live and such a nice, genuine guy. His voice has such soul and it comes through on each of these songs. "True Story" shows his sense of humor as he tells his life story. "I Can I Will I Do" is the highlight for me. Being newly married myself, it's a great song to relate to. Looking forward to the next album!

Tony manages to do it again. His songs are always truly original, and this EP is no exception. From sharing his views in "Close Enough", to providing some beautiful thoughts in ballads such as "I Can, I Will, I Do", Tony entertains his audience like few artists of this day can. I would highly recommend this EP.
