The new CD from TOrcH, Before the Night is Over, solidifies this group's creative muscle. The originals are songs you'll swear are standards that you just can't name, but with subtle pop sensibility and phrasing. Songs about whiskey, God and everything in between are seamlessly nestled amongst dramatic, lovelorn standards like "Get Out of Town" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily". Originals like the vocalese "High Maintenance" and the let's-stay-up-all-night "Nowhere Else To Be" are steeped in bop, with loose, playful melodies that get stuck in your head.
And then there's that voice. Described as "...jaw-dropping, ..." (Terry Sawyer, PoPMatters) Seela lays down a powerful purr to lull you into inebriation on "Sweet Honey Tree," and surrenders a child-like plea for a second chance on the title track, "Before the Night is Over."
Facts:

The standards get arrangements with twists and turns. The arrangements of the originals stick close to tradition. Yes, there's still room for plenty of playfulness in jazz, and Torch knows how to play. ..."Beofre the Night is Over" grooves."

This cd was definitely worth the wait. I've spent hours listening to the first one and couldn't wait till this one came out. Every single song is something special and unique, both the classics and the originals.
