Album Notes

There's more great music coming out of zip code 37206 than any place in the country, and this double-cd compilation is proof. You can't swing a cat around East Nashville without hitting a great musician. Songwriters cause traffic jams at the local coffee shop. Sidewalks are crowded with folks like Todd Snider, Garrison Starr, Paul Burch, Elizabeth Cook, Kevin Gordon, Last Train Home, Thad Cockrell, Chely Wright. This CD's got them all—and tons more-30 tracks that benefit an East Nashville community service group, the Martha O'Bryan Center, offering employment and education services to the neediest of our community’s residents. East Nashville: prepare to be amazed at how much great music is coming from such a small patch of land.

This stellar CD has plenty of new and previously unreleased material. Check out:
-Last Train Home's brand new rocker, "Last Good Kiss"
-Chely Wright's intimate "Wish Me Away," with pedal steel legend Lloyd Green playing a coda that brings tears to your eyes.
-Matthew Ryan's brand new "Misundercould."
-Thad Cockrell's gorgeous "Senselessly Blue."
-Garrison Starr's duet with Neilsen Hubbard, "Try."
-Eric Fritsch's techno remix of Stephen Simmons' song, "Drink Ring Jesus."
-Music writer Peter Cooper's scathing "Ol' Strom," part hilarious, part sadder'n hell.
-And finally, hear what Todd Snider has to say about East Nashville on this set's final song, "From a Rooftop," recorded especially for this compilation. It sums up perfectly how these musicians feel about East Nashville.

The diverse beauty and depth this compilation achieves - over and over again - is remarkable. I discovred this album via an essay by writer Ann Patchett on the East Nashville scene. Now I'm jonesing for a visit. Claire Small!! Chely Wright!! Garrison Star!! Todd Snider!! Sergio Webb!! Yowsers, this is a great record!

Eclectic and Strangely Moving

I ordered this compo because of the Chely Wright track "Wish Me Away", which I heard on her MySpace page, but I'm not disappointed by the rest of it. Much of it is not necessarily the sort of thing I would choose to buy, but the collection as a whole is full of music that sounds like it's made by people who care about what they do, and I've got a lot of time for that. The Chely Wright track is worth the price of admission on its own, though.

we live in seattle and read about east nashville and “the other side” in a recent NYT travel article (written by ann patchett). this compilation blew away all expectations! we had no idea how incredible the real music coming out of nashville is. one song's better than the next. i haven’t been this excited about music in a long time. I cannot stop listening to it. Thank you, and we'll be back for more!

Surely the best compilation of 2007 is Red Beet Records five-star collection The Other Side: Music From East Nashville. I've probably bought 5 copies of this wonderful double album and may well buy more because it's the perfect gift for those who love their songwriters smart and their music rootsy and rocking!
