Physicist is the newest brainchild of Devin Townsend.
Following the theme set by his last effort, Infinity, Physicist explores deeper into the concept of Infinity to the point where all things, either positive or negative, are disregarded in lieu of the middle ground, "The Grey Area"...The sound and visuals of this project reflect the grey theme as well.
Lyrically, Physicist goes from being a cry for help, to total bliss, and all stops in between.
Devin describes the album as "speed metal pop songs" where he combines brutal drumming (courtesy of the ever graceful Mr. Gene Hoglan), with broad, atmospheric melodies and open repetition.
An ambience carries throughout the entire record in the same way as all Devin's work, but a sense of uneasiness rests within this one, making it a very strange trip from beginning to end to be sure.
Crushing guitars and stark production finish this off as a hardened entrance to the 21st century.

When Strapping Young Lad meets Devin's other half...
author: Blademaster Dezo
When Strapping Young Lad meets Devin Townsend's other half (i.e. stuff like Biomech or Accelerated Evolution), you get something akin to "Physicist," which is a very cool album. It's way heavier than other Devin Townsend albums (i.e. Ocean Machine: Biomech, Accelerated Evolution), but not as heavy as his Strapping Young Lad stuff. The SYL lineup plays on this album (Devin, Byron Stroud, Jed Simon, Gene Hoglan). As usual, Gene Hoglan's drumming is godly and gives the record some serious edge. And Devin's voice is as powerful and amazing as ever.
When I first read the lyrics, they didn't seem super deep, but the more I read them, the better they got. Yeah, the lyrics are quite good on this album, especially on songs like "Material," "The Complex," "Irish Maiden," and "Jupiter." And I'm usually very picky about lyrics.
Devin himself describes this album as "speed metal pop songs" and I think that's a decent description, if a bit off-putting to some people. The songs have a pop sensibility, but are most decidedly metal. Songs like "Death" are all out rockers. While songs like "Planet Rain" showcase a more pop sensibility while not compromising the metal edge. The hidden track "the forgotten" after track 10 seems a little odd, but I found myself getting into it as it went on.
All in all, this is a great album.

Been waiting for sounds like this
author: Doug Perry
The music is tight and well thought out. Was never into screaming but there is a quality about Devin's voice that gives me chills.
Great music and beautiful lyrics. THAT is what music is to me and that is what he gave me. I look forward to his other works.

The mad genius has done it again!

Devin has once again desimated the walls of musical genres and boundaries. I was, and always am, impressed and shocked with the ranger and depth of Devin's projects. A stunning piece of art, this album is.
