"If deep, breathy dreamscapes and ethereal, mournful elegance are what you seek, you'll find them here. ..Tears will undoubtedly follow, of joy and despair, and an overwhelming desire to dwell in this space forevermore."

___

Standing out from the pop and punk that dominate the sunny southern california music scene, trespassers william create their own brand of melancholy and ethereal music more suited for overcast days and quiet nights.

The music is rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition with touches of indie, folk, shoegaze and dreampop.

Often compared to red house painters, lisa germano, cocteau twins, and coldplay - the band creates lush, dreamy soundscapes to house singer/songwriter anna-lynne williams' lilting vocals and haunting songs.

Formed in 1997, the band has two records:"anchor" (1999) and "different stars"(2002/03).

___

"Singer Anna-Lynne Williams has one of those crystal-clear voices made up of shyness, loneliness and quiet despair, while her band dream up the kind of space country that might have sound tracked 'Twin Peaks: The Comedown Years'.
-NME

"...her voice is immediately lovable and her inconsolable world-weariness completely convincing. Moving, even. Each song unfolds through a swathe of reverb and allows Anna-Lynne acres of space to express her woes with quiet dignity. File alongside Red House Painters, another band all too aware of the terrifying beauty of sadness."

  • i got lucky!!!

I really mean it. I had the good luck to have ordered the 2002 version and well, i just love dream pop and this cd is icing in the cake. No, wait. Its the icing and the five lovely cherries. Yes, the music is slow and it takes time to grow into you, but once it does, it never leaves. I fell in love to the songs Alone, Let you down and love is blindness. A trifecta about life, really.

It's scandalous that trespassers aren't more well known, maybe their new album will put them on the map. Different stars should have - it's awesome. Beautiful and moving, she really bares her soul and in one of the most gorgeous voices you'll ever hear. The hidden track at the end of the album's probably one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear too. Fantiddlyastic

Wow is all I can say. If you like Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, and The Sundays, don't even think twice about getting this cd. Since I have received it, I haven't taken it out of my cd player. Beautiful voice, awesome guitars, brilliant stuff.

  • It's that good.
    author: CHINASKI (www.cdbaby.com/cd/chinaski)

The first thing you should before listening to "Different Stars" is find a quiet place alone and dim the lights --- let Anne-Lynne's voice take you on a journey. Each song is so well crafted that you will find yourself so lost in the music that at album's end you will have forgotten where you are. It's that good.

  • Perfect.
    author: Sebert

This is everything I was looking for to put me in a mellow mood. The music, the voice, it all comes together pefectly.

  • To be lost in this music is bliss
    author: Aussie Niamh

Combine all the reviews and it gives you an indication of the beauty of this cd. Without CDBaby I never would have known about it. Keep me lost in this music

  • This is Dream Pop at it's finest.
    author: Ocean View Press

No Sophmore slump here. This is Dream Pop at it's finest. This will be your over and over again CD. I loved this CD so much that I actually bought another copy in case my first one gets damaged. Great CD. Check it out.

  • Outstanding...
    author: Michele Ledoux

Every song on this album is phenomenal. Great work by Trespassers William. I LOVE it.

  • It's impossible to say enough aout this album!
    author: Paul

This isn't just an album to listen to, it's an album to lose yourself in. It's one to put in for long drives and lazy Sunday afternoons. For cloudy days and times in which you just need to escape. I can't possibly find the words to give this album the praise it deserves. All I can think to say is that if I were a musician, this is the quality of music I would aspire to create.

  • Very impressive!
    author: Bandanaman

What a beautiful voice swirling in a syrupy sound any head would embrace. The sound is rightfully compared to Mazzy Star, but Anne-Lynne's voice is in a higher plane. This is one of the best forget-the-world CDs I've heard in a long time. I think you'll love it, and if you do, take a listen to the soundtrack from the movie "The Sweet Hereafter". It is similar in spaciness and features the lyrics of Canadian Sarah Polley. Another tantalizing CD. It feels good to purchase a CD like Trespasser's William and know you'll play it for many years.

  • Best CD I've heard in a long time.
    author: Joey

This has to be one tof the best CDs I've heard in a long time. It's so mellow and somber. I would highly recomend it.

  • Wow...
    author: John

This is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever listened to...it's so mellow, tender and sweet...and so sad...it takes me to a magical place within myself...highly recommended.

  • author: Tess

    I love this CD!

  • Very Pleasant and fluid sound
    author: RC

The whole album is arranged beautifully from track to track and maintains a coherent feel and artistry while showcasing different colors of expression and moods. It starts off strong with Lie in the Sound and ebbs and flows all the way through to the last track. A pleasant sound experience, definitely worth buying.

Pure pleasure. Moods. Emotion. Your brain blanket.

  • A Deliberate Deliverance of Greatness
    author: Ronin81

The problem with strong female groups is that most of them are either one hit wonders, tricked out on the Lilith Fair, trying to reproduce 10,000 Maniacs or just pissed off at being girls. Trespassers William is no where close to that group! The songs are strong, the vocals are just infectiously beautiful, and the feel is great. The best thing is that you just get the feeling that the band really takes care of their music and treats it as something serious and personal to themselves, which is a wonder to find these days. The only bad thing I could even think about this album is that, while the album as a whole doesn't convey this, there seem to be a lot of melancholy songs on the album. This isn't a bad thing per se, just don't listen to it on dark nights with razor blades around. Besides that, pop it in and dream!

  • Sweet Sweet Music
    author: John

Hearing a fantastic acoustic version of one song gave me a hair-on-the-neck raising experience and compelled me to get the album. What a rewarding experience it is to hear it in its entirety.

  • Best CD I have heard in 30 years.
    author: Trevor Lindsey

Everything about this CD is perfection. All 11 tracks are moving wonderful accomplishments in and of themselves. Anna-Lynne's vocals and lyrics make it impossible not to feel an immediate connection to her soul, as well as rediscovering your own. The guitar, bass, and drums are just what they should be to create the mood. No more, no less. Just absolute perfection.

  • An oasis of real feeling.
    author: Jon Woodward

We are getting clobbered by pop-culture images of what we "should" like, and then with a sip of coffee and a few moments of reflection, I watch the people whiz by on the street . . . and then a few bars with the headphone on. I'm connected, The people slow down. I think, "This is music with soul."

  • if you love Mazzy Star you MUST buy this cd!
    author: roberto mandolini

Different Stars by Trespassers William is one of the best folk-rock album of pop history. You can fall in love with one song, and then another, and then another...and so one until the album is over; or just feel the magic atmosphere all around his chords and whispers. The U2 cover (on the US edition)and the Ride cover (on the UK edition) are amazing both: how can a band take two wonderful tracks and make covers sound so good? They're incredible.

  • perfect
    author: gary mccluskey

I don't know if this really needs another review. I think you can get a good idea about this cd from reading all of these positive reviews. I'd just like to add that you might as well buy both of their cds at once to save you the trouble of coming back and ordering which ever one you missed. This is as good as it gets, trust me.

  • Ethereal, erotic, irresistible
    author: Patrick

I discovered this band listening to London's XFM. I found the lead vocalist's voice alluring and captivating. The entire CD is smooth as silk and light as a feather, yet with substance and depth. Ethereal, erotic and irresistible, this is how I describe the music of Trespassers William and the vocals of Anna-Lynne Williams. Memories of Mazzy Starr and Golden Palominos come to mind whilst listening to this CD. Colours of shadowy crimson and dusky purple seem to emanate from my speakers. This CD is a must-buy.

  • author: david

The track Different Stars is my favorite. There are no words that do justice to the beauty of the song. Just listen to it and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Thanks to the show "The OC" for introducing the band to me!

  • A nice suprise
    author: Todd

I read about the band on the Sigur Ros message board. I decided to check out the site and an mp3. Within 2 days I ordered the cd only knowing the "mp3". Who says downloading is bad. I might be late on this one, but everyone I have played them for seems to enjoy.

  • A quietly powerful and haunting MASTERPIECE.
    author: Kier Klepzig

I cannot take this CD out of my stereo. Hints of U2, Aimee Mann, even Sigur Ros all blended beautifully with a ghosts of lost love vibe to create a fully captivating, wholly original disc. One of those rare, seemless experiences. To say that their "Love is Blindness" eclipses the original is an understatement, it replaces it. Dare I use the "M"-word? Yep, what the F&$@... the first masterpiece I've heard in a long time. Buy this now. Period.

  • Original, Something Special
    author: John

After listening to "Anchor" for some time, I was expecting the sophomore jinx with "Different Stars". Not a chance! Trespassers William has succeeded in retaining the formula without repeating themselves. The beauty and originality of the music combined with Anna-Lynne's haunting and expressive vocals and the thoughtful lyrics result in a masterpiece that's greater than the sum of its parts. If you want to listen to something mellow that's instantly likeable and the product of true talent, then this IS the CD for you!

  • You know you have a great album when ...
    author: Aussie Jeff

after not having listened to it for awhile you place the CD in the player and you say to yourself ... "This is one f$#king great CD - I can't believe just how good this music is". Well that is what i said to myself after having heard and bought both their albums from this site - CDBABY!! On this album tracks #4 & #8 get me all the time. Very good use of the electronic xylophone. These guys are one of the best groups i have ever heard. I can only hope that they produce more interesting and thoughtful music. And i will plug CDBABY as well, cause if it wasn't for these guys i don't think that i would have ever been given the chance to hear their music. Do yourself a favour and buy this CD .. you will NOT be disappointed.

    author: Dale

You know it's an original sound, when other members of the household demand to know what CD is playing. Everyone seems to get something different from the experience. This is a great CD. From an old headbanger, listening to these tracks really leaves a lasting impression.

  • soothe the savage beast

The disc gets me through many a soul-destroying day at my pathetic Initech job. If I couldn't pop it on each afternoon, I might possibly start punching my co-workers. So, thanks to Trespassers William!

  • Moody, Dreamy, Lovely
    author: Angela

Highly atmospheric melodies for the lovelorn. The lyrics are both intelligent and intellegible--something not all bands in this genre manage to achieve. I can't imagine you'll be able to say "I knew them before..." for very long.

  • a masterpiece!!
    author: Miguel

Rarely do you come across a CD that you can play all the way through without skipping a song. This is one of those CD's! Mesmerizing sounds, beautiful vocals, amazing band. Highly recommended!!

  • Trespassers William make heartbreak sound so beautiful
    author: Alicia

This CD is just amazing, Anna-Lynne's vocals are lush and gorgeous and her lyrics are absolutely heartbreaking. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time.

  • Trespassers William achieves the mood of melancholy
    author: Rachel Murphy

Different Stars continues Tresspassers William's journey from the slightly more upbeat Anchor on the road to the perfect melanocholy. The layering of sound on all of the tracks works well with her voice, creating a lilting, pensive quality that lets this album be quietly brilliant.

  • Haunting and Seductive
    author: Listener101

I picked up Different Stars on a whim, really, after listening to the sound clip of the first vocal track, Lie in the Sound. It's an easy album to get pulled into. The first vocal track, Lie in the Sound, showcases Williams' whispery, inflective voice perfectly, but also introduces a fullness in band-sound that's more than backup--which is less apparent in sound-alikes Mazzy Star or Trembling Blue Stars. Alone, the fourth track, picks up the pace a little, inserting a rhythmic beat that follows Williams' voice as it breaks out of its low, deadpan crawl and strikes a pose of chiming sweetness. Another notable track, Flicker, proves Williams' can use her voice as an instrument---the crystalline melodies bring to mind some of the good Irish songstresses like Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, or even Sinead O'Connor. Although, at times, the drastic dips and slides in her voice seem somewhat affected, as in Just Like This, the unwavering melancholy edge to this album makes it a definite repeat-listen with a few songs well worth using the Loop or Repeat button on your player. What I like about this album, in addition to its ethereal consistency, is the mutability of Williams' voice, which manages to even transcend, at times, the limits of the band's genre. The flexibility of the band's sound indicates good things from future albums. Definitely a must-buy for fans of Mazzy Star, TBS, Red House Painters, or Badly Drawn Boy.

  • I love it
    author: Kim

This CD was so good...Her voice is beautiful...There are some parts where it's a little weak, but other than that, it's so beautiful...The U2 cover, Love is Blindness, is absolutely wonderful...

  • Totally Awesome
    author: Chuck

When your in a mellow contemplative mood Different Stars will speak to you. A Mazzy Star fan recommended them to me and I was not disappointed. There is not a weak track on this album. Listen to the sound bites and you will buy it.

  • My new favorite
    author: Randi

I haven't stopped listening since I bought it! This is a very mellow, but powerful cd. The vocals are soothing, and the lyrics are deep. For such a good band, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them before. Definately worth a look.

  • Wow... not to be heard in a suicidal mood.
    author: Tom

Almost all the songs on this album (but especially "different stars") are very deep, sincere and moving and definitely all of the songs on this album should not be missing in your music collection. Anna Williams voice, the carefully crafted melodies and the manifold background acoustics really emanate a melancholic mood that you just can't escape from. You should not listen to this music while you're depressed if you want to get back up, but if you want to dwell in self-pity: start playing this CD, the music will be strong enough to help you drown in your misery.

  • Very very good CD!
    author: Sancho

This CD has been in constant rotation since I got. The vocals are stunning, the guitar work is solid, and the entire band compliments the songs in a subtle way. I wish it had a few more upbeat songs, but I have nothing but compliments about this CD.

  • wow
    author: julia

this cd amazes me. you can lose yourself in it.... it will envelop you.... her voice is beautiful.... there are any number of compliments. even if you don't normally listen to this genre or whatever of music it is simply incredible music and i would think pretty irresistable.

  • excellent!

I love this cd so much. It has been perfect music for the mood that I have been in lately.

  • I havent heard an album this good for a long time
    author: Mike

When I first got this album, I purchased it because one song stood out, but after listening a few times more and more songs come out of the shadows. I like them better than the song that made me buy it. Beautiful melodies, and a beautiful voice. Very Dreamy, very well made.

  • An extremely well done album. Definetly worth having.
    author: Chad Morrow

All the tracks on this album are fantastic. The bass is one of the best parts and her voice is incredible. I bought this cd because I heard their Love is Blindness on the U2 tribute album. I was not disappointed.

  • dreamy ethereal late-night groove
author: tod - echo park review

with their own distinct sound, but reminiscent of female vocalists of the rock past like Suzanne Vega, Renaissance, Lucinda Williams, the tunes on this disc meld into one another and carried me along through a pleasant evening of martinis and shooting pool. I'm resisting the urge to overplay it.

  • washing over me...
    author: wondermint wayne

it's been quite sometime since i've written a music review, but being a guy who owns over a thousand vinyl records and no less numbers of CDs of the non-mainstream 'stuff', i guess i'm entitled to have my voice heard. no band in recent history has hit me quite like this. maybe it's cuz i've become soggy w/ my latest heart-broken episode, or that i've drunk a little bit more last night than i should've... no, seriously, TW's 'different stars' is definitely something if u r into enchanting angelic vocals and melodic poetry... anna-lynne's voice has haunted me the 1st time i've heard her in my car, and 'alone', 'different stars' among other songs have been washing over me for nearly the past 2 months... it's amazing.... when would i wake up?

  • different stars is an album you can lose yourself in
    author: Lori

I have been a fan of Trespassers William since their first album, but if you've never heard them before i HIGHLY recommend Different Stars. This an album you can drown yourself in. It depicts the absolute sadness of being alone and yet the beauty in that sadness and the beauty in being alone. You can feel the pain of disappointment and of being hurt, and yet you lose that in great melancholic melodies of Matt's guitar. A truly amazing album. Anna-Lynne's voice is the perfect compliment to the genius of her writing. My favorites include: Lie In The Sound - "...and if you would just lean into me would you go..." it's sung a little offbeat, making you hear the desperation and the hope, but knowing it's going to hurt when the answer is received. Love Is Blindness - I think it's better than the original. Love You More - the line "...I'll stay awake all night and blow your darker thoughts far from you; don't say i don't love you more..." captures the essence of the song perfectly. This album is truly a gem.
