It was so good to get back in the studio with the didjeridu !
To be more precise, to be with Randin Graves, an amazing didjeridu player from San Diego, who now lives in the middle of nowhere [actually up at the top of Australia in an Aboriginal community]. Randin does this amazing job of playing the rhythms I write and then layering on his own beautiful tones.
For this CD, he was joined by local artists Dan Reiter [cello] and Tod Brody [flute], with myself [Vicki Trimbach] on harpsichord [keyboard].
The track "fragments of Baghdad" was experimental...I've always put didjeridu with cello and flute, but the harpsichord adds a neat percussive pitched sound to the combo. It's also different from earlier music I've done because I went totally outside of myself for the ideas...I listened to early tapes of Iraqi music, and jotted down some rhythmic and melodic outlines. I thought the music I wrote would be sad given the terrible sadness happening there at the moment, but it's not...it came out with a high energy feel to it...like the old tapes I had listened to.
"SF Fog", played hauntingly by Tod Brody, was inspired by the weirdness of SF fog...I lived in sunny Sydney {Australia], so this cloud thing that mooches across the landscape around San Francisco and the East Bay is really weird !...hopefully the music leaves us in a better mood than the real thing does !!
You can hear my earlier didjeridu music on the CD "When West Meets East"
