Bert Lochs belongs to the rare breed of jazz trumpeters, that not only play in sections of both pop and jazz ensembles but also take jazz improvisation to the next level.
To reach this goal, he took lessons from Dutch jazz artists like Ack van Rooijen and Rob Madna, and played in several ensembles like Jeroen Pek Band, Bert Lochs/Dirk Balthaus Quartet, Big Bizar Habit, The Handsome Harry Company and Bert Lochs Inquisitive Quartet(BLIQ) all over Europe. From North Sea Jazz Festival to Montreux, BIM-huis to the Satchmo in Maribor, in all these places and more, his lyrical trumpet and his melancholy flugelhorn sounded. His style is abundant and introverted at the same time.
He is also busy developing as a composer for larger ensembles. He reached the finale of the Hoeilaert Jazzfestival International Composition Contest with his piece 'One for Me' in 2004, and recently the CD 'Wegsleepregeling van Kracht', was released. 24 poems by Dutch poet Hanz Mirck, surrounded, enhanced or commented by 24 pieces by Bert Lochs. The Guus Tangelder Bigband recorded this project in 2006.
Besides freelance gigs, he is part of the Guus Tangelder Bigband, section member in dance classics band PFA-11, and of course leads his own Trio Bert Lochs.
