Aural Nirvana
author: Howard Mozel
The first CD by a Turkish band in my music collection is a beautiful progressive rock artefact from 1998 recorded in Istanbul. Belying its title and tranquil cover art, Trip to Innerself is no contemplative, navel-gazing brain exercise but an exotic. psychedelic satori of searing guitar, sinewy bass and steadfast percussion. Piano and synths - plus hypnotic vocals of both genders - round out the clear, uncluttered and expansive sound, creating echoes of Tai Phong and 80s King Crimson whipped together in a dervish swirl of Doors, Ozrics, Floyd and much more. Good music knows no borders - nor should your collection.
