Pure joy!
With an intoxicating combination of funk, R&B, jazz, reggae and rap, "Boulevard Strut" brings John Tropea full circle. In the seventies he was the guitarist for Deodato, a group headed by Brazilian Eumir Deodato who also merged jazz, rock, R&B and funk. Tropea then released solo albums in the mid-70s and became a highly respected studio musician working with major recording artists all over the world. This new composition brings to mind "Super Strut" from "Deodato 2." It even incorporates "strut" into its title. "Super Strut" felt like the 70s and spotlighted Tropea's virtuosity on the guitar that would have put him head to head with Santana. There is also a distinct disco beat that is infectious. "Boulevard Strut," composed, arranged and produced with partner Chris Palmaro (like Deodato, on a Hammond) is breezy and joyous and defies you sit still. Tropea's guitar is rich and full, with sections of his trademark virtuosity. Tropea and Palmaro have assembled an incredible group of musicians. The horn sections soars. The addition of Rally with his calypso/reggae rap brings great fun to the composition. It's even more fun when you watch the video they also produced. Based on the video I suspect the song is an homage to vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods and parks in New Jersey across the way from the best views of the Manhattan skyline. I can't stop listening. It is simply pure joy! There is a possibility that Tropea will be heard on the upcoming album by another CDBaby artist, Joseph Leo Bwarie—a follow up to his brilliant debut jazz CD "Nothin' But Love." With Charles Calello again at the helm, I can only imagine what beautiful music it will be.
