Album Notes

"Fire for the Colors" emerged from the composer/lyricists's work on a book about the Kosovo Liberation Army, which tells the personal stories of hundreds of 18-20 year olds who decided to take up guns to respond to the humiliation inflicted by their opressors. The song evokes their competing feelings of hopelessness and determination and their willingness to die for their cause.

For years, no one took them seriously, and called them "bandits," "terrorists," and "kids." But by the time they were done, they had brought down the wrath of the United States and NATO on their oppressors, and won a freedom that their parents and grandparents had only dreamed about.

REVIEWS

Heart-wrenching, Inspirational, and Insightful
author: Ryan Warden
Fire for the Colors is a touching and insightful piece, written by a man who has seen the horrors firsthand. While the song is quite catchy, its greatest strength is its straightforwardness- no attempt is made to sugarcoat the sufferings endured in Kosovo. The song was not written merely to put listeners on notice that people have suffered, but rather to make the listener feel the heart-wrench suffered by those in Kosovo. Hank Perritt succeeds to this end, as this listener not only felt the pain of those who have suffered, but also feeling incredibly lucky to be an American, where we are free from such atrocities. Fire for the Colors is an inspirational effort, highlighting the bravery of those who against all odds, resolved to fight and suffer silently no more. Often times, we as Americans, taking for granted our life, liberty and creature comforts, fail to recall that there was a time over two centuries ago when we stood up against the most powerful army in the world and won. Sometimes it is important to be reminded that we were not always so high, mighty and aloof. Fire for the Colors is just such a reminder.

Poignant lyrics and beautiful gentle harmonies brought tears
author: Hershy Pappadis
Music accompanying lyrics capture the feelings more than if it were merely spoken. The musical harmonies, easy to listen to, allow the feelings of sadness and injustice to emerge. A beautifully written musical piece.
