The theme of AS HE WANDERS is wrestling demons, but with
glimmers of hope throughout, however fleeting. As the
sophomore effort to the highly and widely claimed Lloyd
Maines produced “Valley So Steep,” the Austin-based outfit is
back with twelve well-crafted and superbly executed songs
featuring some of Texas’ finest: Scotty Matthews (Dixie
Chicks, Derailers) on drums, Billy “Dee” (Dale Watson, David
Allen Coe) on bass and Tommy Detamore on dobro (Jim
Lauderdale, Moe Bandy).
Dual front persons Billy Brent and Rebecca Lucille churn out
duets in the spirit and tradition of Porter & Dolly, George &
Tammy, even John Doe & Exene Cervenka. While three years
since their debut, which garnered them such prestigious
accolades as Austin Music Awards’ “Best New Band 2006,” and
The Austin Chronicle’s “Best New Local Act,” the band has
kept busy entertaining enthusiastic crowds throughout the
Western US and Central Europe, including Europe’s
preeminent roots event --The Country Rendez Vous Festival in
Craponne, France. Veteran tourers, Cannon’s pop punk band
Sincola toured extensively with Joan Jett, Butthole Surfers
and Ben Folds five while Malkus toured worldwide as guitarist
and backup vocalist for Nathan Hamilton and No Deal.
"Why the Texas Sapphires aren't plowing over the current crop of country bands is a mystery,"
-Austin Chronicle
"an absolute gem"
