Brooding, country-tinged pop gems laden with unadorned, elegant guitar hooks and road-worn vocals.

notes

"Home", the first release from Signal Hill Transmission, is a collection of subtle yet powerful reflections on loves lost and found and the crossed wires one encounters along the way. The arrangements are intimate while the lyrics expose snapshots of a life filled with romantic insecurity and the occasional burst of hope. Recorded to 2" analog tape in December of 2001 in St. Louis, MO, "Home" is reminiscent of The Jayhawks and REM's earlier work.

Quotes about the band and their recording(s):

“The SHT derive their name from one of the pioneering moments in the history of telecommunication – the successful transmission of the first transatlantic radio signal, sent via Morse code from England to Newfoundland in 1901…The Signal Hill Transmission draw on folk, pop and alt country influences and there are detectable traces of Scud Mountain Boys, Elliott Smith, and early Wilco amongst the songs. Scott Warren has a warm, involving and expressive voice and an intriguing and mostly somber inclination to his lyrics.” Comes With A Smile

“The boundaries of their previous work have now been blasted wide open and the results are stunning…to die for…worth it’s weight in gold – in fact, brilliant… Signal Hill Transmission is undoubtedly the most promising band I have heard in years…They have it all!”
Alt Country Tab, UK

“An engaging collection of beautifully played and exquisitely produced songs...Warren has a real gift for understated but memorable hooks. Still it’s the melancholy feel to the tracks that really pull you in.” Americana UK

“Scott Warren sings lines of loneliness and loss in a deliciously scratchy, versatile voice…drummer Scott Schoen, bassist Duane Rakestraw, and guitarist Mon Agranat are spot-on as well, each contributing to the album’s sonic lushness…Signal Hill Transmission has, indeed, risen to the cream.” Playback St. Louis, St. Louis, MO

“Heavenly pop hooks…Soaring and dipping with the grace of a looping kite…resembles a less synthesized Psychedelic Furs – Warren’s vocals compare to Richard Butler’s, albeit without the gargling-with-gravel timbre – and conjures the hook-laden swells of indie-popsters Kent and pre-stadium-tours Radiohead.” Riverfront Times, St. Louis, MO

“Maturing beyond but not losing sight of their rootsy beginnings, this L.A. band finds more potent use for their electric guitars than previous, crafting sonically rich passion rock…Introspective tones dominate as do sharp and creative arrangements.” Miles of Music, Los Angeles, CA

“A wholesome catchiness to it that never feels forced or trite. All of the tracks have a definite Signal Hill flavor to them. The overall feel is definitely indie-pop, but indie-pop with texture and sturdy craftsmanship. Even the simplest songs on the album have an interesting feel to them, by way of the chord choices and certain candor in the vocals…super catchy.” Erasing Clouds

“In a region populated more by transplants and transients than natives, the hummable songs of pop-rock band Signal Hill Transmission are easy to relate to, with themes of departures, arrivals and hopes for something better…with snappy hooks and flowing harmonies…road-trip anthems.” Pasadena weekly, Pasadena, CA

“Smart arrangements laced with bouncing drums, strumming guitars, and raspy vocals tinged with late night desperation and early-morning reflection.” Fufkin

“This L.A.-based four-piece trade in the same sort of hooky, roots-leaning rock that galvanized the Amerindie heyday of the late-‘80’s. The harmonies of guitarist Scott Warren and drummer Scott Schoen recall those of the early Silos and Jayhawks, as do the band’s searching meditations on falling in and out of love.” Nashville Scene, Nashville, TN

Great little disc here. My suggestion would be to pop this baby in when you're on your next roadtrip. A little bit country, a little bit rock n roll...all good.

  • great stripped down alt. country

i was turned on to this band on their second release (also an ep), but i decided to check out this one (their first release). this one, unlike their recent work, is very stripped down and alt. country. i'm not the biggest country music fan, but this release is really cool. you definitely see where the band is heading. f.y.i. - you can get this and their second release on the 5 dollar special deal.

This CD has some excellent songs. A few are a little two mainstream sounding for me, but some others are really top notch.

A refreshingly honest voice backed up by skillful guitar and consistently strong drums. It's just a matter of time for these guys... they'll be huge.

  • Sounds are mellow but thoughtful with edgy lyrics and sexy tempo.

Reminiscent of early R.E.M., songs are methodic, harmonic, and thoughtful, with edgy lyrics and surprisingly upbeat tempo. Detox music that takes you on a road trip, destination unknown. Gotta get more!

A great compilation of songs. Either listen at home or groove in the radio, "home" keeps the listener's feet tapping. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this duo.

  • Poignant lyrics, vocals, guitar, & harmonica!

A CD for everyone but especially anyone who has been in love. Open, honest, tender lyrics with beautiful guitar & stirring vocals. My husband and I enjoyed it so much, particularly "Wonder" and "Believe (I want to)". Keep up the good work, Scott, and keep them coming.
