Album Notes

Breaking Down the Silence marks the debut of New York City-based artist Jeff Tuohy on airwaves across the country. No stranger to the stage, Tuohy is both a seasoned actor and front-man having shared bills with acts from Howie Day to Rob Base and EZ Rock, and performed to thousands in theaters including the Majestic Theater in Boston and Carnegie Hall in NYC.

Perhaps this history is why his style has been defined by fans as “theater stage meets stadium rock.” His music has the timeless appeal of artists like Sting, U2, Jeff Buckley and Tom Petty, taking the listener on a journey into his life’s experience. Breaking Down the Silence is an honest and genuine expression that hides behind no walls or preconceived, pop-culture safety nets.

-Pat Keating, Insite Magazine

"What is revolutionary however is the skill in which Tuohy crafts each of
the songs on the disc. In this age of singles-oriented albums, there is
nary a misstep to be found...each hit of the drums will tussle listeners' hair and the vocals of Tuohy will cause hearts to catch fire...Give this disc a go and you will not be disappointed." -Neufutur

radio pop of Jason Mraz mingled with the more introspective songwriting of Mason
author: Shane Handler
As the former front man for the college rock outfit 28 and Waiting, Jeff Tuohy offers warm pop versatility with his debut album Breaking Down the Silence. The debut, produced by Aaron Katz (Percy Hill), surfaces with the radio pop of Jason Mraz mingled with the more introspective songwriting of Mason Jennings. And though the album feels more suitable for top 40 playlists than hip singer-songwriter coffee shop, there is still a serving for everyone. From the ringing guitars of the opener “Unaware,” its obvious that Tuohy has a knack for pop, driven home with his emotional vocals. “Knock On Wood” is a dead on ringer for a radio hit with it’s undeniable chorus, while “Serenade” lets Tuohy’s white soul melt. Unfortunately in “Fields of Grey,” Tuohy goes a tad overboard on the saccharine, while the love hymn “Lindsey’s Song” is complete ballad cliché. But when Tuohy scrapes his soft side for the more aggressive attack of “Silence of the Spirit” or his humorous discord for Brandy and hangovers on “Brandy,” his voice truly shines. As he sings, “The World was built on chances/so I guess I should chance mine,” it appears Tuohy as made a good leap of faith with Breaking Down the Silence.
