“Two Miles A Day” is the new quartet recording of pianist Jacob Sacks, bassist Eivind Opsvik, violist Mat Maneri, and drummer Paul Motian.
Early in 2005, Jacob Sacks and Eivind Opsvik had a conversation where they asked each other this question: whom have you always dreamt about playing with? The answer was unanimous – Paul Motian! They decided to collaborate on trying to make their shared dream a reality. After many months of preparation, planning, and persistence the result of that conversation is this album.
The quartet explores five compositions from both Sacks and Opsvik, plus one freely improvised piece created by the quartet. While the music runs the gamut from swinging jazz to abstract sound pieces to folk type melodies, the main focus of the recording is the improvisatory interplay between these four musicians.
