Album Notes

After over two decades as a professional musician, “The Fountain” is Gordon Uchima's first solo CD project and the first release from Urban Mosaic Records. This CD release showcases Gordon's multifaceted abilities as a composer, saxophonist, flutist, and arranger, offering some new music that we believe deserves some attention.

The music offers a tasteful fusion of smooth jazz, rock, world and Asian flavors that reflects Gordon’s experience as an Asian American born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and now residing in the Seattle area. His intention is to take the listener to a stimulating place in a dimension of joy and happiness.

Offered on this release are ten original compositions and one cover tune. The cover tune is an insightful interpretation of a well known Japanese piece entitled “Hana”, written by legendary Okinawan composer Shoukichi Kina.

Key contributions to this project include some wonderful collaborative work from Tim Horiuchi, John Raymond and Michael Cole.

The album title "The Fountain" refers metaphorically to the mystical source from which flows "Music".

The Fountain:
I experienced a beautiful fountain one day and became entranced by its splashing sound -- timeless flow, from a seemingly endless source. In my gaze, I reflected on many things past, present and future. Then came this tune…

When I listen to this CD, it takes me to many places and I see many things. If you enjoy this kind of travel, may I suggest this CD. When I heard "Higher Places", great memories of brother came to me. "Folasayo" brought memories of my father. They both died too young. I would've rated this with 5 stars but I believe Gordon Uchima will be offering even better stuff in the future. Mr. Uchima displays such tremendous ease with the sax. It wouldn't surprise me if he used a Bassoon as a soloing instrument.
