Imagine a more primal, more organic Tangerine Dream and you will have some idea where Turkey’s Ugur Dogan lies. Using a combination of piano, synths and traditional middle-eastern stringed instruments and percussion, Dogan conjures soundscapes of many moods, from simply beauty through joy, exhileration and fear.
This is not shapeless noodling passing for ambience. It is careful composition, building complex layers from simple tonal statements. Sometimes it sounds like there are two compositions overlaid upon one another, such as a TD style synth swell over a rhythmic jazz piano trio, each layer enhancing the other. This is very good stuff for those who can appreciate a standout in the genre of world fusion.
