This compilation album was developed to show the depth and breadth of the Garden State’s Blues talents, a co-op
effort between UJBN, Silk City (an indie-Blues label in NJ)
and the artists. Profits from sales of this CD go towards establishing The Johnny "Clyde" Copeland Memorial Scholarship Fund for deserving NJ youths seeking educational
opportunities in the study of music. Go to the web site(s) for more information and/or to purchase this CD. You can also see links to some of the bands as well.
"I don’t want candy/I don’t want steak, I wants to know,
‘Do Fries Come With That Shake?’, is a short upbeat tune
from Spencer Jarrett. ‘Happy Song’, from Steve Johnson,
is a back slapping, hard driving slide tune that gets you hopping. Sounding similar to local axe-man Ivan Appelrouth’s
slow, smooth and cool style, are the horns and organ backed
‘Chilly’ from The Tonemasters. "I’m down, crawling ‘cross the floor like a crocodile/if you drink good whiskey your pparts won’t rust", is crooned by Soul Food, in the slow shuffle ‘Red Hot Mamma’.
Nicole Hart and Julius Dilligard of ‘THE SHADES’, swap
gritty and soulful vocals in the funky, ‘If I’m Wrong’ (from
their CD, ‘Darker Side of Fun’, which competed in the
International Blues Conference in Memphis, via UJBN
for ‘Best Self Produced CD’ & placed within the Top Ten Internationally.)
My favorite from ‘Nasty Ned & The New Conqueroos’, ‘Watch The River Run’, a funky bare bones, Southern flavored tune, featuring harp and slide-picking, is the poorest sound quality on the CD, yet it has the feel of being recorded in a bar.
This disc is packed with 14 groups, performing 16 tunes
of a variety of bluesy-funky styles. It is a nice sampler of
sounds streaming down I-95 from the Jersey Pike. My favorites had me smacking the repeat button.
