Album Notes

David Ullmann is a New York City Guitarist/Composer interested in exploring acoustic based jazz that incorporates elements of electronica and other music. The result is an album that moves in moods and styles but with a resonant thematic unity. It features as the core group Joe Ashlar on piano, Vin Scialla on Drums and Pedro Giraurdo on Bass.
Through the usage of different textural colors, David Ullmann weaves a unique tapestry of a world of sound. Fender Rhodes, Tabla, and traditional jazz saxophones are all fused together to create an amalgamation of a new york existence. Drawing comparisons as disparate as Soulive to Jazzanova to Bill Frisell, the key ingredient to this recording is the idea that every piece is an actual song, that has an emotional feel, not just a technical exercise.

\"An old photo album is an extraordinary thing. Crack the spine and the line between what is and what was starts to blur. Former selves, simultaneously you and not you, stand frozen. Worlds that no longer exist rest at your fingertips. Time skips along. Random instants are preserved, elevated by their incidental capture, and countless others recede to grey.

It is in this haphazard assembly that the true wonder lies. Invariably, as each page flips by, a story emerges, the chronicle of a time, a place. The chance manner in which these tales are, over the years, collected piece-by-piece and glued together creates a resonant honesty.

Hidden is an album in the other sense, but cracking its spine is no less transporting.\" (From the Hidden liner notes written by Max Nichols)

\"Dave Ullmann\'s melodic lines show a preference for taste and a high level of musical sensibility. He avoids the pitfalls of imitation and therefore makes comparing him to any other guitarist currently out there a tall order. Certainly the first sign that we are dealing with a personal and original voice.\"
-Seth Rosner, Founder
PI Recordings

\"Hidden is pleasure for jazz and non-jazz listeners alike. David Ullmann\'s compositions have a depth, intimacy and singularity that resonate with warmth and emotion. Ullmann and his supporting cast organically combine a diversity of musical influences across genres as the album unfolds, uncovering \"hidden\" gems throughout.\"

I put this cd on without looking at the instrumentation lineup. Right off the bat with "Hidden" I was blown away. Tabla? Man this was differant and I was hooked from the start. I've had this recording for a couple of weeks and can't get it out of my players. I especially like driving to it. My friends all ask "Who is that?" Soon all the world will know...David Ullmann has arrived!!!

Old school and new school together at last!

Dave has to be the most unselfish guitar player on earth, only playing when the song calls for it, not when he feels like it. You can tell he has studied the styles of many great musicians and then made them his own. Great grooves from the whole group touching on both Jazz and Hip-Hop. A great CD to listen to anytime. The artwork is pretty cool too.

I loaded this disc and found myself overlooking the parking lot that conjoins my haven and the "outside"... Hidden became a soundtrack to the obvious... A man getting home from work, running to see his family. A Dominos Pizza Deivery and a graduate getting driven to a nearby ceremony. I feel tranquility. I am a believer that music can unite all things in harmony...I am at peace...

David Ullmann's accoustic jazz (on the new CD, Hidden)comes as a welcome surprise. As a lover of traditional jazz and contemporary classical, I was hesitant about this unknown composer. Yet the strong emotional pull and the thematic overtone are reminiscent of the best of those worlds. There are echoes of Einhorn and Glass, as well as hints of Coltrane. The photo album analogy, used in the jacket copy, is particularly apt. I'd recommend this to anyone who thinks that jazz is dead, or that great performers are all over 80.
