Album Notes

i was born in 1980. grew up in a small town called ørsta here in norway. the youngest in an ordinary wonderful working-class-family with a constructiondad, bakerymom, a housewifesister and a businessbrother.

having an early interest in everything absurd and extreme, i soon became the artist in the family. always drawing, writing and dreaming about making movies and music. no one should ever tell me how to do anything, i knew everything and i always wanted to do everything by myself.

school was stupid, so i spent most of my schooltime drawing and writing scripts and lyrics. i also had serious dreams about becoming a ninja , superhero or a carpenter. movies and special effects became my great passion. spent most of my time making masks and silly shortfilms. i also wanted to be a rockstar, but was never either good enough or cool enough for the hard rock'n roll environment in ørsta city.

everybody was into britpop and england was the shit. fuck oasis! i liked kiss and elvis and wanted to og to the united states and study art, drink coca cola and eat hamburgers.

went to michigan to study for a year at a school with mainly sportjocks, hip-hoppers and poor mexican drug dealers. being the shy guy in a suit who always drew and spoke to the girls i found it hard to fit in. amongst good hip-hoppers i became the norwegian connection, easy e, da pimp, le artiste and so on. i was always alone after school.

the school and "family" situation was very different and somewhat crazy and i ended up having to go back to norway a little earlier than planned.

during my stay in the states i got arrested and sent to therapy for alcohol abuse, visited strip clubs and met with the princess of porn, nikki tyler. i also had lots and lots of time to sit in my room all day and listen to the radio station oldies but goldies, while reflecting upon life.

came home to norway, decided to cut the crap, live life and have fun. partied hard, quit school, had different jobs and made some money. got myself a girlfriend, bought a black '84 opel manta GT and had good days in the streets of ørsta. spent all my time on my car, my dear and watched videos and listened to music.

suddenly, i'd had enough. music was important to me. after some stupid local projects doing covers of nine inch nails, eels, kiss etc. i got an enormous fuck off attitude towards everybody. i had written some songs and recorded some of them on my dad's computer that noone had ever heard. i sold my car and decided to give it all on what later was to become uncle's institution. frustration and a lot of thoughts had to get out. the result was a shitload of bittersweet songs about my look upon what had happened around me, about gowing up, having people who support you, and people who want to break you down.

i never knew what to say when people asked me what kind of music i made. didn't want to say pop, it's not rock n roll, r n b, drum or bass. i called it sweet n sour. a combination of bitter poetry and sweet melodies, beautiful arrangements and wicked sounds. people compare my music to eels, beck, ween and other four letter bands. i've heard that solo artists burn in hell forever so i thought it would be safer to call me uncle's institution and perform on stage as a band with my drummer hogne and dr. svi. it's all recorded and produced by myself in my room at home. i don't believe in horns or strings, so I never wanna learn how to play that, so when horns or strings are needed i use horn or string people. besides of that i enjoy playing all instruments.on some songs i like to use hogne to do the drums and i also let dr. svi play the bass on a song once.

a great album, built on simple ideas and basic melodies with a cracked sense of
author: matt g
Imagine an album where ALL the songs have the delicate beauty and cracked simplicity of Mr E's Beautiful Blues and you have Brand New Fool. This guy wears his influences on his sleeve it's true, but his songs stand up in their own right. A kind of world weary naivity prevails on a record that will have you humming along after your first listen. These songs will be your friends long after your friends have decided you're no fun any more.
