Berwick 'Underscore' Augustin- (Playwright/Poet) Born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti but raised in Miami's little Haiti community. Underscore realized his ability to write at what he called the metamorphosis of his life in 2001. Prior to the latter experience, he received a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering at Florida State University and a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering at Florida A & M University. Berwick uses the pen name "Underscore" to emphasize various issues/topics and ways to counteract them. With a love for the arts, a mind of visions and an interpreting hand, his poems turned into stories reenacted on stage. He has self published a book, Reflections of Divine Intellect (December 2003) and recently released his debut spoken word CD The Base, The Chase, The Place (May 2005). A self taught playwright, he began to carry out the profession God predestined for him as the Director of Proverbs Drama Ministry (2002-present) at Bethel Baptist Church in Miami; where he has written, produced and directed many plays as a member of Café Essence Committee, which fervently host coffee houses to raise money for the Guerdy Felix Foundation Scholarship to assist high school seniors further their educations. After much success with Proverbs Ministry, his vision of producing and promoting community wide interest in culture and the gospel flourished in his latest critically acclaimed stage play project Libéré Liberis. Underscore is the founder of Bethel's own monthly spoken word event, P.H.I.R.S.T. IMPRESSIONZ, and played an active role in spearheading, Xhale at Nuvo Kafe, the first poetry night in the Haitian community. He's also a member of the dynamic Haitian-American poetic ensemble, The Maroons. Mr. Augustin has hopes of taking his works and talents to places far and beyond the state of Florida.


This talented young man is truly inspirational and eye-opening.His message on the tragedy of SEX and AIDS is so deep. It is unfortunate that in our day and age we still don't heed these great words of wisdom... ladies Underscore's voice is truly SEXY. Support! Support! I am sure you will not regret it.

I love the metaphors. You can feel and see the poet's pain. The Truth, a poem performed by THE MAROONS, is exceptional; very talented group of people. We see harmony within the use of three languages intertwined with each other, English/Creole/French. I am eager to see them perform.....Underscore is very diverse in his work....You don't only see the militant side of him.....there is of course the Romantic/love side of him...as well as that undertone almost erotic side of him....underlying behind metaphors and Bible scriptures which is very appealing. There is a certain sweetness to decipher. I like that style, the feeling.

I've been enjoying Underscore's CD and I am loving every second of it, I love the way he mixes the spoken word with music on several of the selections. It is definitely a must have for any poetry lover. "Substitution" (dedicated to anyone that ever lost a loved one) had me in tears......Very bold, different, but with a clear message.

"The Place" which he speaks of the kingdom of God. When I first heard it, I thought I was walking to the gates of Heaven. This is how powerful his message is. As for "The Truth" hmmm!! Let's just say a lot of "Truth" is revealed in this piece. I Love it!!
The whole cd is great. The metaphors he uses so the listener can feel his pain/joy/and sexual fantasies.. anyone that is into poetry would love it.
