Unifics Return

It was an unexpected pleasure to read that the Unifics had once again reformed
And I found it even more rewarding when I listened to their ‘Unifics Return’ album. I first heard them 40 years ago in 1968 when their great debut single ‘Court Of Love’ was issued and followed their careers with interest through to ’71 when the superb ‘Dawn Of A New Day’ was released on Jerry Butler’s Fountain label. They were different from the many other vocal groups with groundbreaking songs ‘Court Of Love’ and ‘Beginning Of The End’ both written by their manager Guy Draper. But with the exception of the songs I mentioned, I found their first album disappointing – padded out with inferior covers and not much else. Not so with ‘Unifics Return’ which provides a mature sound with quality performances and great songs, the majority penned by the smooth lead vocalist Al Johnson, throughout. These songs sound fresh and soulful and the Unifics deserve big success. This album’s the real deal and I look forward to their next one anytime soon. Peter Burns, SoulMusicHQ.com
