The Unifics

Real Soul Magic
author: Barry Towler
\"The Unifics certainly do return, and to a very high standard. There is a spectrum of material on offer here, and Al Johnson and the gang don\'t take prisoners when they are out to catch the ear of those who love real top quality soul and R&B. The early 70s sweet soul sound was fantastic, and the gents bring it smack bang up to date on the beautiful Any One Can Tell You and My One And Only. Their cover of the Mayfield penned Gypsy Woman is also great. This is a very welcome return and denotes yet another step back on the road to sanity in today\'s so-called R&B market. An essential purchase.\"

Unifics Return

It was an unexpected pleasure to read that the Unifics had once again reformed And I found it even more rewarding when I listened to their ‘Unifics Return’ album. I first heard them 40 years ago in 1968 when their great debut single ‘Court Of Love’ was issued and followed their careers with interest through to ’71 when the superb ‘Dawn Of A New Day’ was released on Jerry Butler’s Fountain label. They were different from the many other vocal groups with groundbreaking songs ‘Court Of Love’ and ‘Beginning Of The End’ both written by their manager Guy Draper. But with the exception of the songs I mentioned, I found their first album disappointing – padded out with inferior covers and not much else. Not so with ‘Unifics Return’ which provides a mature sound with quality performances and great songs, the majority penned by the smooth lead vocalist Al Johnson, throughout. These songs sound fresh and soulful and the Unifics deserve big success. This album’s the real deal and I look forward to their next one anytime soon. Peter Burns, SoulMusicHQ.com
