Album Notes

Urban Poets is a verbal dynamic duo featuring two prominent Slam poets.

Thea Monyee', the lady of the two, is mostly recognized from her appearance on Def Poetry Jam where she performed track 6 of "the Family Album", and BET's "Lyric Cafe' " and "The Way We Do It". Thea was also a member of the Los Angeles 2002 Slam Team. Perhaps you've never seen these programs and have no clue what a poetry Slam is, yet her material still sounds familiar. Maybe out of the hundreds of performances she has per year, she was fortunate enough to have you in the audience at one of them. She tends to be unforgettable.

GaKnew (Roxwel), the mad scientist of the poetic tag team, is the only two time Grand Slam Champion that "Da' Poetry Lounge" ( largest poetry venue on the west coast, if not country) has ever seen. You may recognize his voice from the hype 911 call of the 2004 Nike Battlegrounds commercial. Or maybe you know him for his passionate stories and lyrical craftsmanship displayed on the "Grand Opening", a hiphop album released in 1999 by the "Underground Poet Society" (UPS). Though UPS, appears to have been inactive since the release of the Grand Opening, GaKnew never stopped. While on a nomadic performance journey throughout the west coast poetry world, GaKnew has been spending time learning the ways of a producer and obtaining the needed equipment to gain independence. He's the breath of fresh air (or old 1994 Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and C L Smooth air) that today's Hiphop is missing.

Married in July of 2003 and birthing a little poet of their own shortly after, the three have become a family ,hence, "The Family Album".

FEW have the courage to say what NOBODY wants to hear.

This is ART and HEART in it's rawest form. It revives and reassures you of the lessons you've heard from every wise person you've ever spoken with. It's a redefined concept of what it is to be loved--and to love. You will find a new appreciation for language, the ability to speak, convey and conmmunicate--hell, I'm greatful to be able to hear! Thank you.

It's about time!

It feels good to hear something I can relate to. This joint was so uplifting and inspirational. I wish I was a radio D.J so I could play it for the world to hear. Songs like "A Different World" and "Long Over Due" reminded me of catching the bus to high school with Tribe Called Quest blaring in me headphones. If there are more hiphop artist like this, then maybe I should start listening again. Or do I have to go find it on the poetry scene? The beats are cool, could use some help from the Roots, or Slum Village. But the lyrics BY FAR make up for it.
